Another major pork production plant is shutting down over a spike in cases of the coronavirus, further straining the U.S. meat supply chain and raising fears of potential shortages. Tyson Foods said it is closing its Waterloo, Iowa plant, where it has 2,800 employees and processes 19,500 hogs a day. It is Tysons largest pork plant and represents about 4 percent of the nations pork processing capacity. Despite our continued efforts to keep our people safe while fulfilling our critical role of feeding American families, the combination of worker absenteeism, covid-19 cases and community concerns has resulted in our decision to stop production, said Steve Stouffer, group president of Tyson Fresh Meats.

“Fear” is becoming so over-used (like “racist” or “better safe than sorry” or “shelter in place”) that it’s losing it’s impact. It seems that a vast number of Americans are “fearful” of just about anything to do with the Chinese Virus and “fearful” of most everything else over the past six weeks ... including far, far too many “men”.
I love Spam in any imaginable form. I especially love Spam singles when I’m backpacking. A perfect, and desperately needed, combination of protein, fat, salt, and calories.
gosh my boycott of Tyson has been ongoing for over 2 decades....hasn’t done any good but at least I feel better about it....
Hundreds of employees are out sick for a couple weeks for what for most of them will be a crappy cold. Probably single digits will die if that. And most of those will be the “exercise sucks dieting sucks” overweight diabeetus types.
Meanwhile, the plant has some downtime, cleans up, and the employees come back to work when they’re better.
This “food shortage” crap is just more panic mongering, probably trying to trigger panic buying and empty shelves for the TV cameras.
Many thanks for the info!

costco and their sister warehouse chains sell mostly factory overruns, that is, excess goods the regular grocery stores cant sell ... with all the restaurants closed, folks who used to eat out are having to buy their own groceries and cook for themselves and the regular grocery stores can barely keep up, so there are few factory surpluses for the warehouse stores for now ...”
I can’t imagine how hard it is for a company to keep people working at a meat packing plant, when those same people can quit, say “I was worried about getting sick”, and get paid almost $3000 a month in “unemployment” to sit at home and watch Netflix.
They taste wonderful. They’re all dark meat, and when prepared properly, the meat falls right off the bone.
Makes great jerky. Honk!
