Most people don’t realize how much of verbal communications is actually visible. Body language, facial expression, etc.
And then there’s a lot of meaning and intention transmitted by simple tone of the words spoken.
None of that is present in written comms unless great lengths are gone to in adding them as is done in novels and stories.
If somebody doesn't get the fact that I'm joking in a post or writing, then I consider myself, not the reader, to have failed. That's why I don't believe in sarcasm tags.

I used to know someone who was very smart and had a great sense of humor, but she had trouble with determining in personal emails whether a person was kidding or serious.
Speaking with someone in person never gave her such problems.
