Between March 19 — the day the state’s stay-at-home order went into effect — and April 19, citations for speeding more that 100 mph have increased by 87%, according to a California Highway Patrol news release
The monthlong period saw 2,493 citations given for the excessive triple-digit speeds compared to 1,335 in the same time frame a year ago, the release stated.
During a speed enforcement operation on the 5 Freeway in Southern California last week, CHP officers pulled over 14 drivers traveling more than 100 mph. The fastest was clocked at 119 mph, according to the Highway Patrol.
And last Friday night in Orange County, CHP officers ticketed several drivers for speeding, with the majority of those driving in excess of 100 mph, according to the agency.

I did about 8 hours of driving yesterday, ATL => Nashville and back. First trip other than to local groceries/Costco since The Weirdness. There were TONS of cops out on I-75 and I-24, many more than normal.
noticed an increased cop presence on I95 too for less traffic. IT is mighty peculiar what the decision was behind that.
A good friend of mine from college I keep in regular contact with noted just this. The LA traffic has been amazing lately. You can actually speed. And the rush hour bumper to bumper is gone.
Wish the LA traffic were like this all the time, it’s been incredibly light.
There are some treating the freeways like a drag strip race and gunning it at 90+ mpg. I go about 75 and people were passing me like I was standing still.
No cops in sight...(they’re out in the parks busting families with kids kicking around balls, surfers and joggers.
Studies have shown that speed limits should be established at the 85 percentile of the speed that people drive. There is less traffic so it is safer to travel faster. However the speed limits have not been adjusted.

Hmm, it’s so dead on the Hwy around here I’ve found myself slowing down to about 40mph in a 65 just to enjoy the scenery with no one on the road. Gas up here is still $3.10 a gallon. Sacramento hates its slaves.

Several weeks ago, in the space of two hours, Calgary cops busted the drivers of two vehicles, one going 204 km/hr and the other, 192 km/hr on Deerfoot Trail (AB highway 2, called Deerfoot Trail within the city limits). In Imperial, that is 127 mph and 119 mph. Idiots just being idiots. The speed limit on most of Deerfoot is 100 km/hr (62 mph), 110 km/hr (68 mph) on the north and south ends of the city.
As my shifts often overlap the morning and suppertime news, I rarely hear much news. I’m sure though, that the CPS is issuing plenty of tickets. I’m sure that the AB Sheriff’s Office is also doing a booming business on the Province’s highways! I am very OK with that. A real ‘user pay’ system. With Provincial revenue down greatly ( with -$35/bbl oil, the Province gets no royalties) and spending WAY UP (CCP-Coronavirus stimulus), added ticket revenue is one small break.
A relative who is a State Cop in New England told me that they would not stop someone exceeding the limit by 10-15 MPH. Its not worth it on empty highways with infected folks driving around.
However, if you are going 90-100 MPH on the interstate, not only will you get stopped...they will find every infraction they can.
You will be punished for being an idiot.
Sounds fair to me.
I haven’t driven anywhere since March 11th, but between then and a couple of weeks ago I saw some dangerous and angry driving going on.. It seems to have calmed down now.
How does an officer hand a ticket to a driver from six feet away?
If they want me to "stay home" and "social distance" so badly, it only stands to reason they should want me to get there as quickly as possible.

the biggest hidden safety issue for most people speeding is exceeding the rated speed for the tires on the vehicle. And 119 isnt really that fast Im sure there are some covette, BMW and porsche owners who would agree. 119 ? meh. Wanna cookie , do 130+. My car has Z rated tires and a fuel cut off about 127mph. That speed only works without the passenger seat governer installed.
In New England there are not a lot of places where 100 MPH is safe—at least not for long streches.
I once road my large motorcycle in West Texas on my way to New Mexico. I was going as fast as I ever have...90+ and I was getting blown around by trucks going a lot more than me. I think we were going straight and flat for 20+ miles.

I guess if you are going to go that fast, its best of have a lookout. That’s gonna cost you $250+ plus an surcharge in New England.
Once again, very few paid the stay home orders any mind.
