Two of the greatest goal-scorers in NHL history will square off in the digital sphere this Wednesday when Wayne Gretzky battles Alex Ovechkin in a best-of-three competition on EA Sports’ NHL 20 game on XBox.

“The Great One vs. The Great Eight Showcase” is a fundraiser, with proceeds going to the Edmonton Food Bank and Monumental Sports and Entertainment Foundation’s ‘Feeding the Frontlines’ fund, which provides meals to heroes in the medical community.

“This has been an unbelievably exciting opportunity for us to work on,” said MSE’s senior vice president of strategic initiatives, Zach Leonsis. “Not only are the proceeds going to be raised going to COVID-19 relief via the MSE Foundation, but to have two of the most legendary icons of the game playing against each other is quite possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

“This is a new sort of venture for myself,” said Gretzky during his first-ever joint interview with Ovechkin on Monday. “I don’t know about Alex but you know what, this would be fun, it’s not anything serious. It’s about trying to help people who need help right now, and the good Lord knows a lot of people need help at this point in time.”

“I’m excited about it,” added Ovechkin. “Obviously, I didn’t play a lot of NHL, I’m kind of a different guy on the videogames.

AT&T Network is showing Game 6 of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final.

Being as I’m a Penguins fan, I will be watching that tonight.

I’ve got no desire to watch two grown men play video games.
