Facebooks growing power over the public square is back in the news this week as the company announced it is banning the promotion of certain kinds of back-to-work protest events on its platform. While the companys previous bans have largely focused on blocking digital speech it finds objectionable, the move to thwart protests in the physical world underscores just how central the social media giant has become to the expression of democracy and just how much power it now wields over even our physical lives.
On Monday, the company began removing certain posts intended to organize rallies protesting government stay-at-home orders amid the coronavirus epidemic. A spokesperson confirmed that events that defy government's guidance on social distancing arent allowed on Facebook and that it was removing content promoting or organizing such rallies.

I don’t use Faceplant, buy it disturbs me to see the thought police operate without much blowback on Suckerburg.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT START YOUR OWN INTERNET COMPANY!!
(Even though in the current environment Facebook, Google et al would destroy or absorb you before you truly got large enough to challenge their dominance)
Facebook is trying to have it both ways.
It is no longer a platform. It is a publisher and should be subject to lawsuits.
I wish a wealthy tech-savvy conservative would start a social media site friendly to conservatives. But that doesn’t seem to be in our nature. Back in the 20th century, it was said that a rich conservative would buy a professional baseball team while a rich liberal would buy a newspaper.
I’ve been in FB jail more times than I can count!
mostly for posting Pookies Toons
Most venture capitalists are at least economic conservatives and they drive all business in the Silicon Slum...commonly known as Santa Clara County.
They financed Fakebook and others in the original social media go-rounds. Fakebook won the market battle. If it makes money, the VC’s won’t change it.
So if we want a conservative social media platform, it has to generate revenue. FR for example does not, running on a donations model. Keeps JR and his partners working, but that’s about it. And it is inherently political, unlike FB which is supposedly agnostic, but plays with the rules all the time to drive things the direction they want.
Building an internet platform similar to FB is not that hard, although would represent probably 30M in venture capital. Which to them is lunch. But it would have to attract and drive significant revenue to both survive and be relevant. Thus it has to be based on advertising, user tracking and profiling, all the evils that FB, Google and the other reprobates engage in.
Would be a necessary evil and worth it to save us from them.
Last year I had to back to back 30 day suspensions. Beat that!
I’ve been in Facebook jail four times for 30 days each
You are an inspiration to the rest of us!
