Being a teen in the 1990s and I would listen to a lot of national sports talk on the radio. I still remember back then hearing about the hate Chicago bulls fans had for both GM Jerry Krause and the owner Jerry Reinsdorf, near the end of the Bulls Dynasty , but I really never understood what they were trying to do and just how egotistical and stupid both of these guys were in prematurely breaking up a team while making a run at another championship with the best player ever still in his prime.
Krause made some brilliant moves throughout the years for the organization but he certainly could had handled his relationship with the players better but he was all about getting the credit for the Bulls run and running people off. Reinsdorf tried to play good cop/bad cop but he was the majority owner and could had put a stop to the friction, especially with Phil Jackson and Krause but he didnt and made Krause his henchman while he acted like he was just a gullible owner. Plus Reinsdorf was cheap too
Some of these sports organizations past, present and future are run by fools with money and its good somewhat that now players do have a say in getting out or getting in to a team. Im not saying they should have full control over the teams decisions but my god these sports organizations would run over players if they could
Krause made bad decisions. Period. But the Bulls would have ran into the Spurs in 1999.
As someone point out every time but who would guard MJ on the Spurs team back then? Even in his old age with the Wizards he had them in position of going to the playoffs before his injuries affected that. Hes always the X factor
I would like to see the star players start their own teams. Since they are financial geniuses they will do well!
You’re talking about basketball, right?
I think the Pittsburgh Penguins are the only major US sports team where a former star is an owner where success continues.
geez as I remember it there were “jordon rules” and they made him look soooo gooood...
I remember when player Magic Johnson had the Lakers coach fired. That busted my pro-ball bubble.
does elway own part of the broncos?
No but he is their general manager and executive vice president of football operations.
The owners run a business so they get to hire their own management. You know, like they’re the payers and bosses of the players and the players are the payees and the employees? If they own it, and they’re paying for it, then they get to run it any way they see fit. Even if they screw up, it’s still their decisions to make.
Could you see any GM today deliberately breaking up a championship team? The Bulls did it, the Marlins did it - but could any of them get away with it in 2020? Hard to believe - if Kevin Durant had announced he wanted to stay with the Warriors and they’d said “thanks, no thanks” they’d have been crucified by their fans.

That early Spurs team was beatable. But by the 96 Bulls not the putative 99 Bulls with a post-Spinal Fusion surgery. He was never the same again. And Rodman flat out couldn’t play anymore.
Pippen having had surgery...
