National Spelling Bee canceled for first time since 1945

There will be no fidgeting at the National Spelling Bee microphone, no banter with pronouncer Jacques Bailly, no pointed questions about definitions or languages of origin, no dreaded bell that signals a misspelled word.

This year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee was canceled Tuesday, the latest beloved public event to be scrapped because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The bee will return next year, Scripps said, but that’s little comfort to the eighth-graders who are missing out on their last shot at the national stage. Scripps will not change eligibility requirements for the next bee, which is scheduled for June 1-3, 2021. The bee, which began in 1925 and was last canceled from 1943-45 because of World War II, has always been restricted to elementary and middle-schoolers.

“I’m totally shattered and devastated,” said 14-year-old Navneeth Murali of Edison, New Jersey, who would have been among the favorites at this year’s bee. “Spelling has basically been my life for so many years. … I put all my effort into the chance of winning Scripps, and this morning I found out it was all gone.” …

I feel bad for the kids.

It’s a great time and they really enjoy it.

It’s one of the few things these days that doesn’t seem to have been corrupted with political correctness.

Watching Korean women play golf, I copied their swings and my golf scores improved by 10 strokes!

I wish American women golfers were as smart as me, instead they are obsessed about their clothes and makeups and how they look on TV. Such waste of raw physical strength of American women golfers, who could dominate the game if they were good learners.

My youngest sister made it to the national spelling bee in 1978, out of WA state. Not for sure but I think an American kid won it that year.

since 1999 6 kids who didn’t have Indian surnames have one. In some years there was more than one winner.

Sorry, Navneeth. My high school senior and college senior were looking forward to their graduations, my niece to her wedding. Life’s tough.
