Posted on 04/20/2020 10:53:32 AM PDT by know.your.why

Just sharing a disturbing anonymous email that was in my inbox this morning. The email tells me to send $2000 in bitcoin to a bitcoin address or they will send camera porn of me (I dont have a camera) to my friends, coworkers, and relatives.

If you get this same scam you can report it at. https://www.bitcoinabuse.com/

They didn’t get my password quite right. And, the porn thing for me, really? Can they help me to where sexual activity would affect me again? I might pay for that....

“”””Yeah, but people should have any PC/notebook etc cams taped over anyway, just out of basic privacy reasons.””””

Yup. First thing I do when I get a new laptop, black tape over the camera.

"Been around for quite a while."

I'm offended I've never gotten it.

“First thing I do when I get a new laptop, black tape over the camera.”

Yeah, though you can usually just turn it off using the PC software, I think it can be hacked into to turn it back on. Besides, with a piece of tape, if you want to use the cam, it’s easy enough to peel it off and put it back on again when finished.

I reply that their price is a bit steep, but I should be able to scratch it together in a month or two. Please release it as soon as possible. It has been my life’s dream to be a porn star.

I got three of those in the last couple of weeks. The subject headline was an old password I used to use.

Something got onto your system...

Nope, completely wrong. There are databases easily accessible with hundreds of millions of accounts with email addresses (usernames) and passwords. They "personalize" the email to you with that password. These are most often very ancient passwords that you have probably changed already. If you haven't, shame on you.

When I get these emails, they have a password I used a decade or more ago in them.

This just reinforces how you need to change passwords periodically. You might want to check Have I Been Pwned?.

Wiki-->Have I Been Pwned? is a website that allows internet users to check whether their personal data has been compromised by data breaches. The service collects and analyzes hundreds of database dumps and pastes containing information about billions of leaked accounts, and allows users to search for their own information by entering their username or email address. Users can also sign up to be notified if their email address appears in future dumps. The site has been widely touted as a valuable resource for internet users wishing to protect their own security and privacy. Have I Been Pwned? was created by security expert Troy Hunt on 4 December 2013.

As of June 2019, Have I Been Pwned? averages around one hundred and fifty thousand daily visitors, the site has nearly three million active email subscribers and contains records of almost eight billion accounts.

I’m surprised that this is still going on. I figured that Hillary’s cleaners took care of this problem the first time the Clintons’ got this email.
