Dwindling supplies of carbon dioxide from ethanol plants is sparking concern about shortages of beer, soda and seltzer water essentials for many quarantined Americans.
Brewers and soft-drink makers use carbon dioxide, or CO2, for carbonation, which gives beer and soda fizz. Ethanol producers are a key provider of CO2 to the food industry, as they capture that gas as a byproduct of ethanol production and sell it in large quantities.
But ethanol, which is blended into the nations gasoline supply, has seen production drop sharply due to the drop in gasoline demand as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gasoline demand is down by more than 30% in the United States.
The lack of ethanol output is disrupting this highly specialized corner of the food industry, as 34 of the 45 U.S. ethanol plants that sell CO2 have idled or cut production, said Renewable Fuels Association Chief Executive Geoff Cooper.

Interesting. While on vacay with the family in San Diego (August '99), my son and I drove up to LA. Monkish was having a release of something new (I forgot the name). It was outstanding. My 2nd all time fav is Pliny the Elder...favorite is Heady Topper. Stone Enjoy By...is terrific also.
CO2 is a renewable resource. We just need to burn more coal. Co-locate breweries and power plants.
I would too if I had one to spare.
Just don’t drink beer.
Drink Guiness, they use a nitrogen widget, plus it taste good.

Haven’t touched Guinness since their big St. Patrick’s Day boycott in support of the LGBTQQIAAP openly marching in the parades. Haven’t bothered with the other two big Irish stouts like Murphy’s and Beamish, whose owners did the same thing.
We had a meeting yesterday and the boss said sales are up twenty percent.
I work at Coors.
I thought that the ethanol guys were all making hand sanitizer now.
Sometimes when I come to FR and read the titles I just lose all hope.
the left is Full of Sh*t and so NEEDS tons of Toilet Paper
Rooters is a worthless snooze organization.
That is blasmphemy
Definitely. Once people realize how high carbonation levels affect the tastebuds (and give a bloated feeling), they’ll start dropping the factory swill.
I think I’ve only force-carbonated 1 batch in >25 years of homebrewing. Everything is bottle or keg-conditioned.
Sometimes a little CO2 for draft system. Sometimes a beer engine.
That is blasmphemy
.........................
Case in point.
Just use more sugar when priming
Real beer makes its own ;)
I’m doing my part
“Whats with the left and toilet paper shortages?”
We found a way around the TP shortage. There are plenty of lefty newspapers that can be put to good use and finally serve some public good.
