Anecdotal personal experience: taking at least a gram of vitamin C daily results in all "5" evaluations of my gums when probed by the dentists. In prior years I had not been as consistent with my vitamin C intake and had some 3 or 4 spots that were slightly tender when probed. Gum disease and vitamin C deficiency appear related.

Gum wasting and teeth falling out is one of the advanced symptoms of scurvy. However, judging from the number of people who have bleeding when toothbrushing, there is a lot of sub-clinical scurvy in this and any country. Our doctors are not really taught much about this whole subclinical vitamin/mineral deficiency issue. The drug companies are too busy running around giving away free samples and urging young doctors to try their drugs. Many years ago when I was working in the Pharmacology Dept. of a major medical school, my job was formatting and typing the 78 page laboratory manual for the students. There was one page about deficiency diseases with scurvy, pellagra a beriberi. No mention at all of sub-clinical deficiency issues in health.
