Since the coronavirus shutdown began, nearly 17 million Americans have lost their jobs. Thats one-tenth of the nations workforce. Its a public-health disaster. If the shutdown drags on, as many public-health experts recommend it should, it is almost certain to kill more Americans than the virus.
The academics and public-health officials who have concocted models of the viruss spread are telling us that we have to continue the shutdown to save thousands of lives. Its too bad none of their models considers the deaths that will be caused by unemployment.
...
It wont be done by a flick of the switch. Getting back to business will hinge on testing, accommodations employers make for workers safety and the willingness of consumers to patronize restaurants, gyms and other businesses again.
The presidents public-health advisers want the virus todetermine the timetable. But Trump should also take into account the concerns of the silent majority suffering from the shutdown. Its more than just their jobs on the line. Their lives are, too.

Clearly Chinese bioweapon make American brain turn into tofu.
Not.
Good post. Here’s something from back in February that’s revealing: “There are 5,808 cases of the flu confirmed in South Dakota. The South Dakota Department of Health says the flu is widespread and the severity is high. Over 1,000 of these cases were confirmed in a single week.” I would encourage all readers to read the entire Post article in light of that statistic from the South Dakota Department of Health ( https://www.keloland.com/keloland-com-original/flu-cases-double-in-south-dakota/ )
We must move toward how to run an economy under these circumstances.
Counting that which can’t be defined is useless.
Why not just count every death in the city since 01/01/2020 as being “related” to the Wuhan Virus? That will really show how inept the “bad orange man” really is. (sarc)
I have been shouting this for weeks. It is the only thing that will convince the Karens.
I’m sorry...I thought I was replying to a different post about a different article. You can disregard my (Bogle’s) above post about SD and the number of flu deaths.
But yours is a good post, Mr. Absalom.
Then count predictable lives saved.
Less travel means fewer road deaths, etc.
Fewer other contagious diseases going around.
Etc.
Why, we can do that now, people run around and fly everywhere like taking a taxi cab. I’m hoping that there’s a lot less of this crap going on after the ban
What is the cause of death for these shutdown-related deaths? Blood clots resulting from inactivity? Drug abuse and alcoholism? Are we not responsible for our own lifestyle choices? Since the shutdown began I have given up alcohol and come up with a home exercise program. My books and music ensure that I am never bored while freeCodeCamp keeps me learning a productive skill. Quarantine is what the individual makes of it.
