As much as I like Trump (and getting to like him better than Reagan...), I don’t care WHO it is - in the U.S., the President is not supposed to be able to tell the states what to do.

I think Congress overstepped many, many years ago with the interstate commerce bit, and we can’t get that back.

Trump, Obama, George Washington - President does not have total authority.

It wasn't just Congress. Look up Wickard v. Filburn, Supreme Court decision from 1942. THAT ensures that President Trump can tell (for example) Oregon to go back to work, because anything they do affects interstate commerce.

Maybe he’s laid a trap for the states to finally recognize their own sovereignty. Now the MSM is bringing out the 10th Amendment. They declared it dead when Obama was president.

I agree that Trump does not have total authority. But then now the libs are touting Federalism.

Do you think maybe Trump’s choice of words was possibly Genius. If the states are given the right to declare their own response to this Crisis, then when the SHTF, he cannot be blamed.

“Trump, Obama, George Washington - President does not have total authority.”

I think Trump misspoke when he said the president has “total authority.”

But what the president arguably DOES have, is authority on issues that affect national interests, such as interstate commerce. So, if a company in, say, New York does business outside of New York, that would fall under interstate commerce. A president would NOT have authority over a shop that interacted solely within the borders of the state within which it resided, although the federal government would have jurisdiction over that company under certain circumstances (for example, in the event of constitutional violations).

Feds tell the states what to do all the time. It’s the money.

55 mph, 21 drinking age or no highway money.
Medicaid.
Dept of Ed rules or no Ed money.

PDJT tells Fredo’s Brother, wanna go on your own I dont think so.
Want Fed Bucks, get with the plan.
Lets get this open or we’ll all be broke.

I shouldn’t have to remind everyone about the time that Obama sued the State of Arizona and our Governor Jan Brewer, for trying to enforce Immigration Laws on the books, because it is the responsibility of the Feds to enforce Immigration Laws. BUT THEY WERE IGNORING THE IMMIGRATION LAWS AND ARIZONA WAS (AND STILL IS) BEING OVERRUN WITH ILLEGALS.

So, tell me Mr Big Shot Baier, WHO ACTED LIKE A KING?? It has NEVER been Trump!

I think Trump get his authority though the golden rule:

The man with the gold makes the rule.

I think he said it for a reason - he knew the media would run with it, DEMANDING it be up to the Governors, that it is CONSTITUTIONALLY(!) up to the Governors.

...when they don’t open up, because orange man bad and can’t go along with him, they’ll be held responsible by their people - not PDJT.

And folks now can’t say the shutdown was on orders of states cities and not Trump while defends his “total authority” comment.

Unforced error on his part to me.
