What is going to happen to college student?

Posted on 04/13/2020 7:33:30 PM PDT by MNDude

I know that many students around the world are taking classes online at home. However, I'm curious what is going to happen to the millions of students that are engaged in classes that require Hands-On. For example, mechanics, surgeons, etc.

Will they be required to retake a class from the beginning in autumn? What about the incoming class? There will not be enough room for both an incoming class as well as are returning class for most of these.

Does anyone know a student like this, and what are they saying the plan will be?

College student will be just fine. College student may get dose of real world, and have to work harder. College student did get screwed, but college student will get over it.

First, figure out how big a problem this really is. A lot of institutions switched over to on-line instruction when schools were ordered closed. How did that effort turn out?

Hire extra staff (instructors, grad assistants, and maintenance) and hold night classes during the fall semester as needed.

Alternatively, hold full session classes this summer to cover the missed classes from the semester, then have a regular start in the fall.

My 2 cents.

I don’t think the schools are even seriously planning to re-open yet. What they do probably hinges a bit on how long they’re down. And that is going to vary from state-to-state.

Our professors with labs are sharing the experiments over the internet. Not as good as students doing the experiments themselves.

Our music voice and dance professors are listening and watching student performances over the internet. Current machines have cameras and microphones built-in so it’s two-way. Again, not the best.

I am one of these students. I am enrolled in 9 credits at the local community college.

I am taking Photography 2, Photographic Lighting 1, and Advanced Independent Study.

Photo 2: The digital portion, the course instruction, and student critiques of the course was easily adapted to on-line learning. The printing of photographs has been impossible.

Lighting 1: **BIG fail!*** 90% of the course is learning how to use the expensive equipment in the photo lab. All of this instruction will be taught in the fall during the Lighting 2 course.

Advanced Independent Study: ***BIG fail!*** I am painting portraits in oil of the Visual Arts faculty. The professor supervising my special project cannot look at my work in person and offer critiques. Photographs of my work on-line is no substitute for seeing it in person.

Good luck with that. There is NO WAY that teachers will give up their summer to continue the kids’ education.

I know the answer for the 2 photography and one art courses I am taking at my local community college. ( 9 credits)

Two of the courses are a BIG fail. One is a partial fail.

Yes!....Pass-Fail, Withdraw, or regular Grade.

The community college that I am attending has offered the students a Pass, Grade, or Withdraw. I have chosen to work toward a Grade for the three courses I am taking.

The maritime college in Maine may be opening for a few weeks this month to permit students to return in small groups to finish course work that has mandated (by the US Coast Guard) requirements of hands-on work so they can graduate on or about May 5.

Oh, yeah! So many are qualified to teach anything whatsoever AND they have any type of equipment in the basement that could be needed to do everything.

You, and others like you, are doing the best you can with what you have. I did a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph. D. in Polymer Science and spent a long career in a corporate analytical lab specializing in microscopy, image analysis, and compositional analysis using X-ray Energy Dispersive Analysis. It sounds like you are teaching your students to think critically about the methods they use and the data they analyze. Hopefully they will grow in their ability to explain their results and conclusions to others. Instruments change — quite rapidly these days. Those who adapt well to changing environments will be more resilient and more likely to succeed.

In the last two semesters, we had 2 full clinical days(from 6:30 to 4:30) a week to fulfill our requirement with a skills lab for 3 hours once a week. How can those be fulfilled with no clinical times allowed in the hospitals and with the 6-foot distancing rule for the skills lab? Our skills lab had a robotic patient that we (our team of 4) had to “discover” what was happening with that patient and intervene, be it a heart attack, an allergic reaction to his IV antibiotics, shock, etc. while the instructor is off to the side to ensure that you are intervening and following the proper protocols for that situation.

Some things just have to have hands-on experience. The BLS requirements for the first class is a 4-hour lecture and skills class. After that initial class is completed then you are allowed to renew (every 2 years) using an on-line review with a test at the end, but you still have to do the skills check in person.

And the BLS course is just the basic course, then there is ACLS and PALS with considerable more time to fulfill the skills checks, again as a team.

Of course she will. She has an accounting degree. That wasn’t the point. You’re just too stupid to comprehend it, lol.

OMG do you people not see what’s happening? I know wintertime can’t but really the rest of you can’t?

The cost isn’t going to change!15 or 20,000 for an online degree? It’s been happening for the last 10 years. Seriously do you people think the agenda isn’t going to be a part of online?

What’s happening has been going on for over 70 years.

My two youngest, 22 and 24, told me today that we can’t fight the innocent people of china or innocent muslims because they are innocent. I told them to read up on the bombs dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki and that we did that to prevent more american soldiers lives from being lost.

We either want to win a war or we don’t.

We lost the Korean War. We lost the Vietnam War. We lost the Gulf War I and II.

Keep talking war.

The Chinese will shut off our lights in about ten seconds.

You all want to take on the country with the most people, a huge manufacturing base, and nukes. Plus, some of the most evil minded smart folk you can think about.

Who is going to protect SK, Japan, the Philippines or SE Asia?

India would be a smoldering mess.

So yeah, let’s keep taking about war with China.

You guys can’t think beyond the war woodie you have.
