A Charlotte woman hasn’t left her house in more than three weeks, yet still tested positive for COVID-19 late Thursday.
“I’m absolutely terrified,” Rachel Brummert, who already has an autoimmune disorder, said. “This is the sickest I’ve ever been and it’s the most scared I’ve ever been. From what I’m hearing about ventilators, it’s scary stuff. I’m really hoping I can wait this out at home.”
At a higher risk for complications due to her underlying condition, Brummert said she listened to the health experts. Other than a trip to the pharmacy more than three weeks ago, she hasn’t left her house once.
“I really thought I was doing everything right,” she said.
Brummert said aside from the pharmacist and her husband, who grocery shops but is temporarily living in a separate room, the only other person she’s come into contact with is a woman who volunteered to drop off groceries at her doorstep once. Brummert said the woman later tested positive for COVID-19.
“I barely had any contact,” she said. “I didn’t even touch her.”
Brummert said she gets the mail every few days, but always wears gloves. However, she didn’t think to wear gloves when bringing in packages from her front porch. In addition, she said she hasn’t eaten takeout.
Brummert has experienced many of the symptoms associated with COVID-19, including cough, fever, headache and trouble breathing, but even so, she said it took several days to meet the criteria to be tested.
Regardless of the source of the infection in her case, Brummert knows her diagnosis is just another reminder that COVID-19 is easy to get and often hard to trace.
“I’ve never had anything like this before,” she said. “I’ve had the flu. This is not the flu. It’s a whole nother monster.”

There’s research showing that flu like viruses travel well in the air under 6 grams of absolute humidity. Charlotte on April 1 (for example) was 5. SO you’re probably right; just chatting with the woman on the porch.
It’s also possible it was the handling of the groceries. I spray bleach on a paper towel and wipe them all down before putting them away. I soak produce in a pot with water and 1/4 cup of lemon or lime juice.
She didn’t wear gloves when getting her groceries, could have been on the packaging, or if she has her drugs delivered then on that packaging. Also the husband goes out. Several possibilities here.
“Id like to know if she wore a mask when the woman came over to bring the groceries, that will be the key to figuring out how she got it”
More important - what hygiene protocols was the delivery person using.
Cough on the products, victim handles products, gets infected.

The headline gives the impression it was a pure 3 week isolation but.....
Her husband was coming and going even though he stayed in his own room. she went out to get the mail and she brought in food dropped of at the door by a woman (who tested positive).
She was working hard at it but those virus critters are sneaky and always trying to find a way.

More than likely transmitted from touching the grocery bags, especially if the other person wasn’t wearing gloves, touched the bags, etc.
As someone said, “Every virus has an address.”
Some people are going to get it, and it’s going to be passed on regardless. The goal is to slow it down enough to minimize the number of people who have it at the same time.
And those groceries were touched by both.

How much slobber was on the groceries. Maybe her husband is asymptomatic.
Could she have gotten it BEFORE the beginning of the three-week period?
I had flu from mid-Feb. thru first week of March, approximately 18 days, although the worst was the first six.
Once the antibodies test is available, I’d like to test and see if I had Chinese Flu. I suspect I did/do.
I’m almost 100% sure I picked it up at the Planet Fitness down the street where I used the treadmill to run every two days.

What treatment would you give to someone without lung failure? There are numerous cases now of healthy younger people put on ventilators and suffering lung damage or death.

She’s the type of person who should be isolated and masked; let the rest of us go about our lives.
She’s provably never really had the flu. Just a respiratory thang.
