Major League Baseball is considering a plan that would eliminate the traditional National League and American League alignments for the 2020 regular season if and when it takes place, a high-ranking official told Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.
Under this scenario, all 30 teams would return to their spring training facilities in Florida and Arizona. The teams would only play games in their respective states and with no fans in attendance. The divisions would be realigned based on the proximity of spring ballparks for ease of travel during the COVID-19 outbreak.

There won’t be a 2020 season. Sucks.
So under this plan, the World Series would be between the winner of the Grapefruit League vs. the winner of the Cactus League?
As long as the games are televised, I’ll watch. I’m so sick of no sports I could scream.
I think you are right.
There will be no MLB season and perhaps not even an NFL season or NCAA Football season.
there’s plenty of sports on TV- granted, its 4 or 5 years old!!! NBCSN had last year’s Indy 500 on last night.
“So under this plan, the World Series would be between the winner of the Grapefruit League vs. the winner of the Cactus League?”
That seems to be the idea.
A great big asterisk, and that is if the season takes place.
Maybe they could have the catcher crouch 10 feet in back of the plate. Of course, they'd have to eliminate base-stealing. Baserunners would have to keep one foot on the bag at all times until the ball is put in play.
The umpire can stand 10 feet further back with a pair of binoculars.
there will be an NFL season- somehow.
If they need to quarantine everyone for 3 weeks then play in front of empty stadiums starting in September, that’s what they’ll do...the TV ratings will be off the charts, which will suit the owners...
Sports without fans??!!
That’s like sex without a woman!!
Or...my usual love life :)
OK LAST off color joke on Good Friday.
It’s noon now.
Let’s all start to focus on what really matters today
They are desperately groping for some way to prevent the TV networks from claiming breach of contract.
Who is going to get stuck with the Astros?
WHY BOTHER?
First, we all know it’s about the MONEY! Empty stands?
Second, Shouldn’t it also be about the FANS? Empty stands?
Third, Isn’t it about “statistics”? Completely changing the rules, dynamics (Empty stands) and competition (statistics) of the game?
Call the season off or start normally. The financial risk (being sued by fans or players who get sick) would be too great, so just call it off.
It isn’t like its never been done before (strike).
How do you keep a runner on first base?
He won’t be held on first and can steal second as he can’t be tagged out and then on to third with no tags allowed and then home where the catcher will get out of his way.
Maybe canceling the entire season won’t be so bad. Maybe the greedy owners will lower their prices next year, so the fans won’t have to float a loan to get to the ball park. It will be a humbling experience for high priced free agents.
Ths whole season might feel like you are watching exhibition games during spring training.
I read an article about this the other day. The teams would relocate from their dugouts to spread out in the empty stands. Pitches would be called electronically, with home umpire standing away from the plate. Seven-inning games.
Imagine if a few cases pop up here and there in the Fall or Winter and we go through this multi-month shutdown next year too. We may destroy our country, and the world, in a hopeless attempt to completely wipe out any last vestige of this virus.
The precedent has been set with the ‘experts’ taking control of us and dictating more and more restrictions on our liberties. Meanwhile, the regular flu continues on as it does every year and there is no mention of it anywhere. Sheer madness, and even the president is kowtowing to the little doctor and the scarf lady.
You could watch the 1991 World Series games on youtube. Considered by many to be one of the best 7 game series ever.
Grapefruit League West:
Astros
Cardinals
Marlins
Mets
Nationals
