This is another video for ocean liner and tugboat fans. It shows various historic ocean liners arriving in New York harbor. In some cases, the newsreel crew was there because somebody notable was on the ship. In other cases, they just seemed to be there to film the arrival and docking. 00:00 The United States Lines' SS WASHINGTON, as seen from water level. Taken in 1934. 00:25 the United States Lines' SS LEVIATHAN (ex Hamburg-America Lines' VATERLAND) arrives at its pier in early 1928. Some nitrate film degradation. 02:45 On a clear, bright day in March 1928, Hamburg-America's ALBERT BALLIN arrives in New York. This film segment has no sound. 05:10 the Italian Lines' ROMA arrives. At the beginning of the segment, you can hear the newsreel crew arguing with the pier crew about maintaining silence during filming. Some nitrate film degradation. 08:20 The French Line's ÎLE DE FRANCE arrives in the spring of 1929. On board is French boxer Georges Carpentier. At 10:35 the newsreel crew can be heard trying to get his attention. 12:20 The LEVIATHAN again, this time arriving in the heat of summer. The attention of the crowd at the end of the pier is divided between the ship and the camera crew. 19:35 North German Lloyd's SS BERLIN is seen from another boat that follows it to its pier. These films are a reminder that arriving by ship was a big event. People crowded the piers just to see. The newsreel cameramen took a lot of footage (though they didn't seem to stick around for the final tying-up), and I haven't tried to edit or condense what they shot.
