Dr. Drew Pinsky is issuing a mea culpa after continually downplaying the danger of coronavirus for months and claiming it was "press-induced panic."
He once said you're more likely to die after being "hit by an asteroid" than the highly-contagious virus. On Saturday, he drastically changed his tune.
"My early comments about equating coronavirus with influenza were wrong. They were incorrect," Dr. Drew said on Saturday, referring to his consistent comments from February and March. "I was part of a chorus that was saying that, and we were wrong. And I want to apologize for that."

In Washington State where the first known coronavirus case in the country and also the first deaths occurred... things appear to be petering out. This is especially true in the eastern part of King County where we live which was the epicenter in the state and the country. It doesn’t show up as dramatically in the statistics since other parts of the state are still picking up cases and the authorities are now testing anyone who thinks they might have been exposed... now approximately 80,000. Tens of thousands of deaths were initially predicted... the entire state is now up to 310, far less than typical flu numbers. We were number 1 in the country for new cases for at least a month, we are now down to number 20.
Why? The hospital intensive care units started to empty out and the decrease in the number of new deaths began before the governor’s stay at home order had a chance to do anything. The thing just ran its course. I suppose that someone has leaned hard on Dr. Drew, and the others who were providing realistic perspectives. I never followed any of them, but it would seem that here at least their predictions were far more accurate than the worst case scenarios used to terrorize the public... Despite being the first place to have cases and deaths from coronavirus we are not on track to have even half as many deaths from pneumonia as we had in the 2017-18 flu season.
The thing that is amazing to me is the number of people here who are completely terrorized. And my best friend who lives in Arizona which now has slightly more new cases than Washington wears a mask, gloves, and goggles and then changes and launders his clothes after going to the grocery store.
