Hearing a lot of talkback nutbags say ‘We don’t need this lockdown - look at Sweden - they’re doing it right.’
Australia.
Population: 25 mil.
Deaths: 34.
Sweden.
Population: 10 mil.
Deaths: 373.
Good one, nutbags!
Belgium - population 11.5 million, 1,447 deaths. Perhaps whether or not the country has locked down is not as big a factor as some other factor that might be coming into play with these three counties. Hint: look at Sweden, Belgium and Australia on a globe or map; all have about the same population, but I bet you notice something quite different about them when you look at the globe.
I’m not saying Sweden’s approach is best. Way too early to tell, but I think you are missing the point.
They are expecting more early infections / deaths in the short term.
The question is how much worse off will their country be in the long run.
If they can achieve close to the same end results as their neighbors while not shutting down their country and destroying their economy, then it will be viewed as a great decision.
If their final numbers are way worse than everyone else’s, then it will have been suicidal.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
