Crucial Facts About Covid-19
Just Facts ^ | March 31, 2020 | James D. Agresti

On one hand, the facts show that:

--the death rate for people who contract Covid-19 is uncertain but is probably closer to that of the seasonal flu than figures commonly reported by the press.

--the average years of life lost from each Covid-19 death are significantly fewer than from common causes of untimely death like accidents and suicides.

--the virus that causes Covid-19 is “very vulnerable to antibody neutralization” and has limited ability to mutate, which means it is very unlikely to take lives year after year.

--if 240,000 Covid-19 deaths ultimately occur in the United States, the virus will rob about 2.9 million years of life from all Americans who were alive at the outset of 2020, while accidents will rob them of about 409 million years—or about 140 times more than Covid-19.

On the other hand, elderly people and those with chronic ailments are extremely vulnerable to Covid-19. Furthermore, the disease is highly transmissible, which means it could spread like wildfire and overwhelm hospitals without extraordinary measures to contain it. This would greatly increase its death toll.

However, such precautionary measures often have economic and other impacts that can cost lives, and overreacting can ultimately kill more people than are saved.

Four Short Pieces of Advice for President Trump on the Virus

1. Show the chart that shows how the RATE of CHANGE in number of deaths is dropping.

2. Offer more realistic hope. President Trump could say something like this: “We are going to have a huge party when this thing subsides. We’re going to dine out, travel, and enjoy life.”

3. Be encouraging. He could also say, “Keep building and growing, America. Keep hiring good people. Keep making great products. Show our leadership. Have faith that moves mountains.”

4. Report new cases (and deaths) of the flu alongside new cases (and deaths) of the coronavirus. This will help put coronavirus in perspective.

We are seeing reported cases and deaths being attributed to Covid-19 but hearing NOTHING about how greater the testing is.

I suspect I have had my meeting with WuHan a couple of weeks ago here in Florida. My county is showing fewer than 20 cases officially but in the middle of last month many people had flu symptoms, most minimal, and ascribed it to “allergies.” AND 20 people showing up as confirmed cases surely had the infection for 2-3 weeks previously.
I don’t have pollen allergies but sniffled for a few days and had a coughing spell like I have never experienced before, one short bout of rapid fire “dry” cough. I did not really know what was meant by dry cough before. Now I know. I also had a very bad and uncharacteristic headache for a day. Wife had another set of symptoms that should have presaged being very sick were it normal flu but did not get sick further. Daughter and her three boys the same, headaches and sniffles and some cough. SIL who is a pharmacy tech at the hospital had “tightness of chest for a week.” He has asthma so thought it was that but his inhaler did not help this time. I have heard neighbors say similar things. I work as a secutiry guard at a shipyard where men are sent home for 2 weeks if they show up with sniffles or cough. Surely all the germs do not go home with them. Many of the guys have “felt funny” for a couple of days. I have come to believe that millions more have been infected by WuHan Flu than credited with it but for maybe 90% it is a little thing that might not be even noticed. If that is the case I do hope it confers immunity, at least for the current version and, if that is the case then all the shutdown and hysteria is merely the nation beating itself into the ground for no good reason. Quarantining is not accomplishing anything because the infected ones have already spread it about prolifically.

“Quarantining is not accomplishing anything because the infected ones have already spread it about prolifically.”

Keeps them from more spreading.

He (and our illustrious Governor Inslee and every other governor issuing stay-at-home orders) should also tell us what their exit plan is. Zero infections/deaths for a week? Two weeks? A month? Two months? Three months? A year? What exactly are they looking for??? It is like we have been sentenced to a prison term with no defined end. Give us a goal...something...anything...instead of leaving us all hanging, wondering.

If Governor Inslee lets this thing drag on and on and on through the summer, his re-election hopes will be considerably damaged. Right now, he is living in a digital world while life itself is analog. When will he and the other government officials going to make that inevitable judgment call that is similar to:

“1. Show the chart that shows how the RATE of CHANGE in number of deaths is dropping.”

That hasn’t happened yet.
