Damn it.
Sorry, Tom, bad break.
Tom was the greatest, sad to see him go, but he will be remembered with love.
I am glad he was an inspiration and role model for you.
Rhetorical question...of course I could look it up but I threw it out into the arena, jeez.
So, as a Lions’ fan where is your pain threshold now?
Is there any other sucker lower than a Lions fan?
I watched the game live too at age 12 and was blown away by the kick.
I have been advocating that the Ford family release their “Death Grip” on the team and that they be sold to another loyal Detroiter but no, they suffer like masochists.
Cleveland guy here...you rang?
Dempsey showed great courage to not let his dream of playing football be limited by his handicap.
His kicking shoe contained a wooden block between his deformed foot and the end of the shoe making it essentially a human croquet mallet. He could swing that leg and make the ball travel long distances but he was also annoying inaccurate as you might be hitting a football with a croquet mallet. That explains why he played for so many teams.
On that fateful day in 1970, his head coach said Dempsey had begged him to try the kick and the coach relented only because he was confused and thought the ball was five yards closer to the goal than it actually was. The coach thought it would be a 58-yard attempt (which would have tied the then-NFL record).
After his success, some NFL teams protested that he had an unfair advantage so the NFL passed new rules on what was allowable in a kicking shoe but Dempsey was grandfathered in.
RIP good sir.
Thank y’all.
FYI-His last few days were in hospice; where he was released after icu. He previously lived at Lambeth House; the nursing home associated with NOLA outbreak. Got exposed there.
Again...
RIP Sir

I have seen a few cases of Alzheimer’s - periodically the sufferer will have a moment of realizing something is seriously amiss and the look is of confusion and fear....then watching a spouse or other loved one trying to stay positive but with fear and pain in their eyes as their loved one is no longer recognizable except for physical features....it’s a terrible thing.
Bonus shot of Alex Karras (71). Back when the top guys even stayed in for field goals.
how is it possible for a franchise to be so bad for so long?....its almost a mathematical impossibility...as for the kick, the Lions simply didnt even try a rush..he kicked that sucker and you could hear the boom in that stadium. LOL...so typical of the Lions...
for the next few months, DO NOT VISIT FOLKS IN NURSING HOMES.
== = = = = = = = =
The cynic in me asks how many are NOW attempting to visit nursing homes that never thought they had the ‘time’ to visit them before?
Kind of like you see the woman (mostly women) with 5 or 6 kids in tow going to the grocery store.
Especially when one of the kids is a teenager and ALL the kids are ‘walking’.
They will tell you that it is good to make everyone stay home BUT raise hell with you when you ask ‘why all the kids’ out here today? AND next week THEY will be the ones ‘crying’ because they have to wait outside for someone to leave.
It is time for the Duchy of Grand Fenwick to attack again....
They would be able to walk right in and take us over (Well, a lot of ‘us’.....<: <: <:)
RIP
Did you ever see Johnny Carson with Alex Karras talking about the play? It’s hilarious. Karras said he normally lined up off center, but for this play he lined up on the end of the line so he could get a better view of what was about to happen. Then Johnny asked him what he thought after the field goal was made, and Karras said, “I wanted to cream that club-footed SOB.”
Karras hated kickers.
I keeck a touchdown! I keeck a touchdown.
I appreciate Dempsey because he was a great straight on kicker. These soccer style kickers are good, but straight on kickers had more of a sense of uncertainty to me. Made the game more interesting.
And then there was Eddie Murray's miss against the 49ers.
He died from Alzheimers disease and dementia. The flu was just extra. It could have been the common cold.
Sorry for my delayed response.
Your question:
“how is it possible for a franchise to be so bad for so long?....its almost a mathematical impossibility...”
Well, even back in 1966 I remember my late father (a season ticket holder at Tiger Stadium) used to lament about the Lions’ “front office” or management under a guy named Russ Thomas and of course William Clay Ford.
Since 1957 this ridiculous team has gone to the Toilet Bowl.
Why in 1970, in the Playoffs the Lions lost to the Dallas Cowboys 5-0! That is a baseball score! They lost to a field goal and touchback!!! How absurd can one get?
If the Lions want to win a few games they need to be released from Ford “Bondage”. THEY NEED TO BE SOLD. Yet not a single Sports writer in Detroit has brought this topic up and it behooves us to find out why.
There seems to be a sort of death wish in Detroit to become the worst team of all time in NFL history.
Cleveland? You’re a great team, better than Detroit.
SELL THE TEAM! Change hands! Change your approach! Try something new, refreshing that just might convert a terrible team and management to a winning one.
