Price gouging?

Newsom was right to balk at hand sanitizer for $400. Are other vendors hiking prices on other things?

Those laws are based on emotion and ignorance. We all know the lack of intelligence amongst most legislators.

The literal anti-gouging retards are wholly responsible for the vast shortages we are experiencing.
And then they feign ignorance. Their solution is more government.

Look what they’ve done to bleach

Smaller sizes and higher prices

Regular chlorox is up almost 100% from a month ago in same size

Yes I came here to remind FReepers that the free market will stabilize supply of whatever we need and we should not demonize “gougers.”

It sounds outrageous to charge $400 For hand sanitizers. Maybe a few hundred bozos will buy it. Wealthy bozos.

Then entrepreneurs like the My Pillow Guy say wow I Can make that for $1 and sell it for $350 easy. And a few more buy. And then demand lessens and he drops it to $300. A few more sell and it goes down to $250. Etc.

Meanwhile all across the country all the producers and many new ones are churning them out like mad. THE PRICE WILL DROP AND AVAILABILITY WILL INCREASE UNTIL SUPPLY MEETS DEMAND AT AN ACCEPTABLE PRICE.

Gougers are just the first phase of ramping up a sudden supply to meet a sudden demand. They aren’t demons.

Good comment on price gougers.
You forgot however that all our laws, taxes, regulations, and license structures protect existing producers against sudden new competition.
The little grey cells are wondering how you could legalize the selling producing you imagine, how all of it would have to be changed.

Yes appropriate and inappropriate regulations are part of the cost.

Hand sanitizer is rubbed onto the body. Consumer protection should be efficiently done to make sure it a) isn’t harmful and b) actually sanitizes.

Ideally the appropriate regulations would be efficiently applied. Ideally.

Like the my pillow guy. It’s excellent he’s retooling to make masks. But of course there does need to be some objective quality control. We can’t just have people seeing two tissues together and selling them as N95s.

I agree with your coworker. I have something you want or need. How much will you pay or someone else pay. Simple capitalism. If you have the product feel free to sell below market price.

Gouging their employer with minimal effort for full price. But damn those people taking risks with commodities.

We have a partial bottle of hand sanitizer and only use it to fill the small bottles we keep in our cars for convenience....soap and water is not only cheaper but more effective when at home - where many of us are spending so much time these days.

I went to Von’s the other day because I was sure they would have what I wanted. Groceries here have been really hit and miss. Anyway, I was shocked at all their prices. I was going to buy some canned peaches to make a peach cobbler. They wanted $2.99 for a small can of peaches. Needless to say...no peach cobbler.

Why buy it at all? A mix of hydrogen peroxide, alcohol water and dawn dish detergent should work better than most. The science of soap – here’s how it kills the coronavirus
