llis Marsalis Jr., the jazz pianist, teacher and patriarch of one of New Orleans great musical families has died.
The 85-year-old jazz piano legend was hospitalized with symptoms of COVID-19. He had been tested for coronavirus and results were pending.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell issued a statement Wednesday night on his passing.
"Ellis Marsalis was a legend," she said. "He was the prototype of what we mean when we talk about New Orleans jazz. The love and the prayers of all of our people go out to his family, and to all of those whose lives he touched. He was a teacher, a father, and an icon ... This loss cuts us deeply."

Cher hasn’t got it yet? Why not?
...and Streisand...
It can’t survive in her body.
gone too soon.....only 85....
One of the greats.
Saw him many of times at Snug Harbor and other places around New Orleans.
Chuck Norris was exposed to the virus. Now the virus is in quarantine for 14 days.
RIP.
This is sad news. I’ve seen him play many times. RIP Ellis.
It is time to start quinine and zinc supplements as a preventive for those over 60 or at risk w underlying conditions. Rest In Peace, Amen.
LOL!! There's no longevity in my family. I'm 72 and the last one in my family. One died at 51, two at 69, another at 72, and the longest lived to be 74, so when I see some soul passed at 85, I say "what a lucky bastard."
Cher hasnt got it yet? Why not?
The virus cant live on plastic.
Anyone over 70 (60?) who dies, died of the Xi Jinping Chinese Communist Party Flu. Theres money in that cause of death, vs. he was 85 and his time had come.
Similarly, no one who dies in China died of that, because if you say it was that cause, you get a bullet or similar.
I’m hoping one of my favorite composers will make it through this viral moment; Phillip Glass; a Minimalist/Classic composer. Koyaanisqasti may be one of his better known pieces. That was from 1983.
Phillip is now 83 y/o.
He is an acquired taste. Either you love most of his work, or you can barely tolerate it.
Damn, damn, damn.
A friend of a friend, and one hell of a musician.
RIP
My first visit to New Orleans was 3 months ago and I went to Snug Harbor and saw his son(s).
His name is still on the Snug Harbor calendar! He played there just 3 weeks ago!
Very sad. I loved New Orleans. What a place.
I had a female friend, now deceased, who grew up in New Orleans and was more or less a jazz fanatic. She knew the family.
