Are we sure that coyote isn't a wolf?

Reading replies to that post some say wolf, some say coyote.

The coyotes we used to see at our ranch in Northeast Texas were always short hair and looked pretty scrawny and mangy. There were, however, coy-dogs, which were a cross between coyotes and dogs. Maybe if that was a coy-dog I could understand the thick coat, but it definitely looks like a wolf to me.
