Confederate General Thomas Rosser invited Generals George Pickett and Fitzhugh Lee to join him for a shad bake lunch at his camp. It was a quiet and relaxing afternoon for all. Meanwhile, about 2 miles South, at a road junction called Five Forks.

One of those incidents like Rommel being absent during the Normandy landings and then getting his staff car straffed by an allied fighter-bomber and run into a ditch when he was hurrying back to the front. Sometimes the bosses are out-of-position when stuff goes down.
Yep. Maybe Rommel’s presence at the front might have changed things at Normandy, maybe not. I don’t think that Pickett’s presence at Five Forks would have made much of a difference. Sheridan’s forces were considerably stronger than Pickett.
