A group of NCAA student athletes from the biggest conferences are asking the NCAA to step up and take care of them. While player eligibility remains a major focus of student athletes, the group is also asking the NCAA to assist with proper food and housing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The group, called the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), organized to serve as a unifying presence for college athletes. Student athletes from the five power conferences — the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC — make up the SAAC.

Many of the kids that colleges recruit come from poor families. With everything shut down, I’d imagine that includes the student dining.

The NCAA makes big money off of what these kids do. During this time, helping these kids would be the right thing for the NCAA to do.

Most are already getting athletic scholarships.

I never got an athletic scholarship, and for good reason.

I thought athletes who got scholarships weren’t allowed to work. For some reason capitalism doesn’t apply to college football players.

“A lot of those guys come from not the greatest home situations.”

People are surprisingly unaware of their cultural biases. You can have a full ride scholarship to college, but if your parent(s) are dirt poor and can’t send you money you will still have a problem. I have seen this. You can’t eat books and tuition.

Billions - and that’s just football. Imagine the March Madness (and the betting), etc. It’s absolutely insane the colleges and universities are allowed to make that much money off “amateur” athletes.

Bad timing with this for sure, sports betting via mobile phone was just getting up to full speed here in Indiana when the NCAA tournament was cancelled.

Wouldn’t shed a tear if all of the sports betting companies went bankrupt. They’ve ruined sports.

If Dad is even identified, he’s not providing any assistance, but will show up when the pro contract is on the table.

Maybe they can call the booster who paid their family $100,000 to go to State School U.
The boosters want them on the team so bad, they can coddle the children.

I’d be good with that. The NCAA frowns on it, has largely stopped that sort of thing.

The NCAA has made BILLIONS annually over the years - it can float “student” athletes until things return to a new normal and they make their billions again.
