A Common Sense Approach to COVID-19 (Vanity)
vanity | 3/29/20 | Central_VA

The one size fits all solution is going to ruin us as a nation. This needs to stop!! Below are what I propose as a common sense approach to dealing with COVID-19. Breaking us up into risk groups makes sense, at least to me.

Group 1: Ages 0-40

This group does not need to practice social distancing or change any behavior with respect to each other in this group. This group can work, play and go about their daily lives as normal with the exception of respecting the practice of social distancing with group 2, 3 and 4.

Group 2: Ages 40-60

This group should exercise some caution when going out in public ( gloves and masks) and protective distancing if they feel it is in their best interest.

Group 3: Ages 60-80+

This group should practice social distancing and avoid going out into the public domain only when necessary.

Group 4: Those at risk w/ preexisting conditions

Maintain complete isolation and have care givers tested regularity for COVID-19 if possible.

Anyone experiencing any type of flu or cold symptoms should consider themselves temporarily part of group 4 and self isolate for the duration of symptoms.

The young are at little risk of having any symptoms at all - even if infected. Those that have symptoms recover in days. This group is NOT at any substantial risk at all. Nice to be young.

BS. The young are NOT at risk; any more so than from the flu or the common cold. WE ARE NOT ALL THE SAME. The “punish the whole class” approach is an insult to my intelligence.

The old like to be separated when it comes to “senior” discounts, but let a pandemic hit that basically only affects them and it’s — WE ARE ALL IN IT TOGETHER.

These are the COVID-19 mortality rates by age calculated by the Chinese CDC:

ages 10-19: 0.2%
ages 20-29: 0.2%
ages 30-39: 0.2%
ages 40-49: 0.4%
ages 50-59: 1.3%
ages 60-69: 3.6%
ages 70-79: 8%
80 and over: 14.8%

The overall mortality rate estimated by researchers was 2.3%, but experts caution that it is likely exaggerated due to milder cases that have gone uncounted.

My mom is 74.

I don’t want her to leave this world having been murdered by the Chinese.

On top of that, I put no trust or credibility in Chinese numbers or anything else Chinese.

China can go jump off the face of the earth.

You can't separate people that way very easily.

You have households of all age ranges. You have workplaces of all age ranges.

To many of the under 40 crowd still get sick and need hospitalization. 20% of hospitalizations were aged 20-44."

Keep thinking.

Letting those under 40 go on working and living would not be putting your mother at any additional risk. This is getting humiliating and is totally unfair AND STUPID! We can’t keep going on like this.

This first preliminary description of outcomes among patients with COVID-19 in the United States indicates that fatality was highest in persons aged ≥85, ranging from 10% to 27%, followed by 3% to 11% among persons aged 65–84 years, 1% to 3% among persons aged 55-64 years, <1% among persons aged 20–54 years, and no fatalities among persons aged ≤19 years.

Those older than 40 need to go on living, those in the household at risk need to be isolated. Sorry.

You can do whatever you want. I’m not stopping you.

My guess is this isn’t going away anytime soon, and it’s going to get a lot worse.

I’m not even sure why you would say that.

Go do what you want. You don’t need my permission or acceptance.

Even if you could isolate people by age, you’re going to put 20% of the under 40 crowd in the hospital, which will overwhelm the system.

And if 20% end up in the hospital, then I bet at least another 20% are out of work 2 to 3 weeks with this illness. Maybe 60% can fight it off with no symptoms or miss less than 1 week of work.

I think the solution is that everyone wears masks. Preferably googles too. Everyone, whether healthy or sick.

Social distance until you get the spread rate low in the community, and then everyone wears masks until it’s completely eliminated from the community. Community/State isolation until the communities around you have low spread rates.
