Rot. Bet it was a simple lack of maintenance.

Well there is an inspection forthcoming. Whereas and henceforth a determination will be acquired as to the severity of the keeling to starboard. No raising the mizzinmast’

"It was not immediately clear Sunday morning what caused the ship to sink. "
Maybe the hull sprang a leak and there were insufficient bilge pumps?
Just a wild guess.

Keeled to starboard = Heeled to starboard? Keeled isn’t a typical nautical term for tipping over...

Officials at the center Did the officials hire anyone to maintain the vessel and check it every day?
Either they didn't have someone on duty or the person on duty was negligent.
"Officials at the center" have to answer questions.
This shouldn't have happened.

Sad to see it is sinking. Beautiful ship.
“...his classic book.” Classic book, for sure. Impressive story: Richard got off the ship in Boston to visit his parents and a fellow sailor went along. The sailor asked Richard, “Where do your parents live?” Richard said enough so that the sailor lead the way and found his parents’ house by using the stars in the sky alone.
