If the bubonic plague like what we saw in the Medieval period happened tommorrow magically, we likely would bring it under control via killing rats and fleas really fast and have nowhere near the percent fatalities that Europe had back then.

I think the gene pool is also stronger. A few thousand years of humanity fighting off stuff creates stronger stock.
