This is a "ventilator. They get about $200 bucks each for them. There are millions of these in hospitals, ambulances and clinics. Only drawback is that it requires someone to squeeze the bag...

One of the problems is that these type of ventilators do not maintain a constant air pressure, this causing the alveoli to collapse. This breaks down the alveoli cell wall and increases the fluid blocking O2 transfer.
A CPAP, or constant pressure device maintains the pressure and functions on a differential wave to provide respiration. This constant pressure stops the alveoli from collapsing on zero or negative pressure.
This is also why the probe position decreased the death rate by approximately 16%.

Tuesday, parenthetically, I underwent a hip replacement surgery. They gave me a spinal and a sedative, and stuck what felt like a nebulizer face mask over my nose and mouth. All the racket of power screwing and whacking my hip with a hammer and chisel kept waking me up, and I had to manually keep the mask from cutting into my eye, ‘cause it kept getting knocked askew by the vibrations. Both my legs, however, were completely numb throughout.
Bizarrely, this was all done by a top flight orthopedic surgeon and an equally good anesthesiologist, with a department head supervising, and I’m fine, other than the pain and stiffness. Came home Thursday. It would make a great comedy sketch.

A modified CPAP would work far better.

Death with this virus is caused similar to SARS in that the ACE2 receptors deep in the lungs atrophy receptive to the spikes on the virus. This causes the inflammation that kills.

We called them “bag masks”

You can use that one if you want, but the rest of us would refer this one:

That device is a ventilator in the same fleeting sense that an umbrella is a shelter.

You must live somewhere the healthcare system is still able to do something else. Be grateful.

If this is the case, I might be able to use my blowdryer in the ‘cool’ setting if I need air, no?

After this is all over; America will be treated with a Neuralizer; and we’ll just forget all the unpleasantries and freedoms we lost.

An automated ventilator is only moderately complex...it needs great instrumentation though and several fail-safe systems to make it safe. There's an app for that!

Serious question: Is a ventilator the same as a respirator?
