I was using “family to feed” to cover all the expenses of a wage earner who has a wife and children. If the boss isn’t paying them while they are out, it’s a big, big problem. People are closer to the edge these days.
I’m not sure how other states are doing it, and I hope they all are, but Calif has waived the usual one-week waiting period for unemployment ins. Sign up online, get a check on cycle. Ask questions later. That plus the rebate, payment, stimulus whatever we’re calling the insta-money, should get most folks thru. I think if we all hunker down, we can avert or highly minimize a second wave, and deal with sporadic outbreaks as they occur, while people get back to work.
There’s also something about small businesses having to go thru their local banks for special loans, that may be forgiven if the employer doesn’t lay off his people at all - he uses the loan to keep paying them and keep the rent paid (but I haven’t looked into that yet). If the boss doesn’t know about it, make sure he does.
