Four passengers have died on board the MS Zaandam, a cruise ship currently off the coast of Panama with dozens of guests suffering from influenza-like symptoms, at least two of whom have coronavirus, the vessel’s operator said on Friday.

Other than that we are having a great time
I’ve been on a number of cruises where people have died or the ship has been diverted to a port to offload someone in bad shape. A lot of cruises during periods when school is in session have a huge percentage of people over 70, and a lot of them not in good health.

Taking a cruise is on my bucket list of things never to do.

I could never understand paying thousands to get on a giant ship full of old geezers constantly lining up at buffets and sleeping in a closet sized room. It seems like so much money to be constantly standing in a line, always pulling up to the same tourist trap gift shop fried fish layovers etc
For us it’s the tours.
We’ve done England, Ireland, Scotland, France, etc on cruises.
You’re basically using the ship as your hotel and don’t have to pack/unpack and schlep luggage every day.
I play my own instrument and have fun with it. Heve a repertoire of maybe 50 tunes. In normal times, I can easily find folks to play music with. Nothing like it. Don't make money, but that is not why I play.

I went on a huge ocean cruise ship about 15 years ago for a family event. No desire to repeat.
Like the small European river cruise thing, much smaller. I’d do that again, if we get back to something resembling normal.
Yup. Did it once to see what it was all about. Bored out of our minds. Next year, I bought a new Corvette and drive the twisties in western North Carolina.

The cruise operator said it wants to transfer groups of healthy Zaandam passengers to its sister ship Rotterdam, which is now alongside the vessel of Panama.
Holland America Line said it was still working with the Panamanian authorities to see if it could get approval to transit the Panama Canal and sail to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
That's what I used to think...until I was talked into taking a cruise a bit over a year ago. It turned out to be great fun. In fact, it was on Holland America's Rotterdam, the ship now taking on the "healthy" shipmates from the Zaandam.
I had thought that cruises would be boring, calorie laden, wastes of time. In fact, they were just the opposite. Travel was mostly at night, and the daytime stops were overfilled with so much to do that we couldn't come close to everything available. I learned a lot about great places, and had a grand time. We chose to eat dinner in the formal dining room where we had great cuisine which I wouldn't normally spend the money on, and the portions were not overdone. There were always healthy food choices in the open dining rooms for the other meals. It was a moderate calorie trip, though you could easily choose to overdo it. There was great entertainment on the ship, too, though we rarely had enough time to include it.
