DETROIT – Take a moment away from coronavirus craziness to remember one of the most memorable sports moments in Detroit history.
On March 26, 1997, the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche dropped many, many gloves, and set one of the best rivalries in sports ablaze.
Hockey, along with every other sport, is cancelled right now as the world deals with a pandemic. But for a moment, let’s relive this iconic Joe Louis moment:

I think it was supposed to be a prize fight, and a hockey game broke out.

I still have a copy of that game on DVD. The Professor taking on Foote to start it all off.
You knew things were heated between these two teams when Igor Larionov -- who was typically one of the least penalized players in the NHL -- got involved in a scrap with Forsberg.
So many side stories with this rivalry over the years.

I watched this the other night on NHL live. This weekend I am watching the 1994 Stanley Cup finals between the Rangers and the Canucks.
The good old days! The Hammer was the best at what he did. Nobody messed with the Broad Street Bullies. Man, I miss those days.
The ESPN Documentary on The Broad Street Bullies, is probably my all-time favorite Sports Documentary.
Especially the Soviets.
That was back in the days when the Avalanche and Red Wings became the hottest heated rivalry that matched the historical rivalry between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens.
Heck, that was a frequent occurrence at the old Philadelphia Spectrum between about 1973 and 1979 (particularly any time the Rangers, Bruins, Islanders or Flames chose to try and match-up).
Heck even the Leafs and Canadiens could & would answer the bell if they though they had the game in the W-column.
Players fighting is kids stuff. Nothing can match the Bruins foray into the stands to fight the Rangers fans in 1979
One of the greatest nights in Hockeytown history.
A bloodletting that had to happen.

Oh man..that was a classic.
I was at a Flyers game, against the Bruins, in 1970. Derek Sanderson was penalized and while in the box got into a fight with some fans. His team mates went into the stands to defend him and a huge brawl ensued. The Flyers were a relatively new team then and at the time I was a bruins fan. Not long after that I became a Flyers fan and am still one to this day. I miss this season.
