So you think it is just an “unwarranted assumption” and not possible that a good amount of people had it, recovered from it and never reported it?

Not based upon what we know from identification of traceable vs. community-spread cases, the distinctive characteristics of the disease, nor those places which have a saturation of testing such as South Korea. That’s three different lines of evidence right there that *all* vividly point to it not being so.

Even the CDC assumes 36 million had the flu, recovered and never reported it.

No one tries to locate everyone who had the flu, and trace both who they got it from and who they may have exposed to the virus. That alone makes it a wholly different situation, but there are other factors which also make it an inapplicable comparison in that manner.

Yeah, but the article contained the actual dates of the comments as being February. So it clearly predates the Mar 11 video of Dr. Fouci stating that CV is 10 times more lethal than seasonal flu.

For the poster to not only post the article but to cliam it was evidence of Dr. Fouci having to eat crow is what is dishonest.

Could have been an honest mistake. An overeager flubro grasping at straws and not reading the article. But lets hear the explanation from Enlightent1

“Things appear deceptively dire if we calculate death rate solely by reference to reported COVID-19 cases; but the picture is deceptively benign if we measure deaths against an inflated conjecture about the non-reporting population.

“I suspect that this explains the ostensible contradiction between Dr. Fauci’s two comments on the fatality rate. Context is everything. In his House testimony, Fauci was confronting a political narrative that COVID-19 is really no worse than flu, and reliance on reported cases showing a 10:1 difference was a useful rebuttal. In his essay, he was trying to demonstrate to other scientists (and whatever sliver of the public reads medical journals) the imprecision of our knowledge about exactly how much worse COVID-19 is than flu.”

His February Essay matched his public comments at the time. Not much was known yet and they obviously didn’t trust information coming out of china. And I think they were also trying to placate the public. Something the public doesn’t need nor appreciates.

By March 11, They had better data out of non China countries, and they realized that this really was 10 times worse than the flu. And that was reflected in Dr. Fouci’s comments. And he even framed those comments of :ten times more lethal than the seasonal flu” as a way for Americans to get their heads around this.

“I will give him credit for being a big enough man to admit he was wrong. Most people with his credentials are far too arrogant to do that.”

This was written a month ago.

Agree. Could have been an honest mistake. We all make them. Original Poster explanation would be appreciated.

Which public comments?

Could be. I hope Dr. Fauci takes the opportunity of this 'formal' publication to explicitly clarify his Feb 28 statement.

See South Korea. Compare the numbers in a day or two, or a week, or back though all of times they’ve been posted about over the past month.

If there were a lot of unknown cases (multiples of known cases) in South Korea, the outbreak would be expanding sharply.
