People in Asia are wearing medical procedure (surgical) masks in public, not N95 masks. Medical personnel wear those to protect patients from droplets sprayed by the medical personnel when coughing or sneezing. Use by the public, in public during a CV95 epedemic, minimizes their transmission of the virus to other people. That helps the other people, but not the ones wearing the procedure masks.

I have procedure masks at home for any visitors to wear inside my house, if they don't have their own masks.

The CDC and Vice-President Pence told the public tnat N95 masks wouldn't protect them from the Wuhan Virus. This was a lie which destroyed their credibility. They lied thinking that would preserve the limited public market supply of N95 masks for medical personnel.

What is interesting on the mask topic is comparing media coverage of masks from January and earlier to media coverage on masks in February and March.
