A Fun Family Game Idea

Like many families, ours is separated by COVID. My son and I are together at hour house in the San Francisco Bay on the Peninsula. Our oldest daughter and boyfriend are in the East Bay. Our middle daughter is in Denver at her home. My wife is at our vacation home in North Idaho with our doggie.

Our eldest came up with the idea of using Zoom to have a Family Game Night. She's our creative one and thought the game "Scattergories" would be fun and easy to play over video conferencing. It's been a favorite family game for a while. She found a YouTube timer with a tick-tick-tick sound for countdown from 3 minutes; she found the Scattergories category cards online; and she found a random letter selector web app.

So we all gathered round last night and played eight rounds over an hour and a half. It was great fun with lots of laughs and joking around.

Everybody enjoyed it so much we decided to meet again in a week and probably make it a regularly scheduled get-together.

Zoom is a great video conferencing tool for these times however, if using the free version, make sure to remove the applet / plug in from your laptop or computer when you don’t need it anymore. (Very good) industry rumor has it that the company was founded on Chinese PLA money and the plug in could enable the company to have access to your laptop or PC.

That’s awesome. I’m loving the positives, like this, that I’ve read about. About 15 of my nieces and nephews did a Facebook Live “from your bunker” event last Friday evening from various parts of the country and had a great time!

Forgot to mention that Zoom normally has a 40 minute limit on free accounts, but they are waiving that during COVID. At the 40 minute mark, a small pop-up says you’ve reached the 40 minute point but they are letting you continue for free.
