apan's prime minister Shinzo Abe has conceded that a delay to the Tokyo Olympic Games could be 'inevitable' as the world continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, Abe told parliament that Japan was still committed to hosting a 'complete' Games, but added: 'If that becomes difficult, in light of considering athletes first, it may become inevitable that we make a decision to postpone.' The decision came as Team Canada and Team Australia announced they will not be sending athletes if the games are staged this year.

Looks like the participating nations will force the IOC hands. No Aussies is a big blow to swimming.

I'm certainly no expert on such matters but seeing the devastation that this Chinese virus has caused...and will continue to cause...the industrialized world (US,Europe,Japan,South Korea, etc) it's easy for me to imagine China being the big winner here...at least in the short and medium term.

If anyone wants to try to convince me otherwise..have at it.

Tough call. Lot of $$$ laid out and it’s not like the Japanese economy is going gangbusters like in the 1980s.

I say put it off until next year. What harm could that do? The last thing the world needs is a round two of this china virus.

Sure—imho the virus has been put on pause in China—probably has not even infected 1% of the population—and it needs to infect half the population to begin to have herd immunity.

The moment they come out and play, the virus comes out to play.

The Chicoms rule with an iron fist today, but the virus may be the _only_ thing that can knock them off their perches.

This is the first inning of a long game—way too early to call any winners, losers, or injuries...

>>The last thing the world needs is a round two of this china virus.

they may try to keep us all “sheltering” until the period they predict will be “round two” is over.

we are already being told that we can’t sigh relief when cases (initially) drop.

“This is the first inning of a long game—way too early to call any winners, losers, or injuries...”

However, the development of a vaccine within the next 18 months will hopefully put a worldwide end to this version of the coronavirus. It will likely do nothing for the next version, though.

Canada and Australia has broken the dam so to speak on Olympic cancellations. When one of the big countries cancel (US, UK, Germany, France, etc) the Olympic committee will cancel the whole thing till next year.
