Officials on one of the cruise ships that has been trying to find a port where it can offload passengers told all guests to stay in their rooms Sunday after 42 people reported to the medical center with “influenza-like symptoms.” It was not known what made the 13 passengers and 29 crew members sick on Zaandam, a Holland America Line ship. There are no tests onboard for the novel coronavirus, which has infected hundreds of passengers on at least a dozen other ships around the world.

If they let the passengers off in New York City or Seattle they would probably improve the ratio of infected to non-infected.
This Cruise ship trip started on March 7th, IMO the $hit had already hit the fan. Why in the hell did these people even board the ship? If management was refusing refunds prior to setting sail they better have top notch Insurance and Lawyers.

I’m sure everyone has their own reasons - from being full-up FluBros, to the same reason people here send their kids to public schools (”hey, I pay taxes to those schools, and I’m going to get my money’s worth, even if it does destroy my kids”).
Anyway, I think the cruise companies are simply doing their best to hang on to cash, but they all know they’re doomed, as it will be at least 5 years, maybe 10 years, before that business ever gets back to normal, as this crap actually does scare people, much more so than the earlier risk of just getting the runs.

Only if they’re confined to the sundeck, or somewhere outside, permanently. Otherwise they’re simply spewing massive amounts of virons into the ship’s ventilation system, so as to infect others, as happened in Japan/
Actually have a friend who is studying the Diamond Princess debacle. All early signs are pointing to glove wearing crew who spread the virus across the ship. Rather than sensible precautions of changing gloves each time they changed an area, the crew would wear one of two pairs of gloves issued to them each day, actually keeping old ones 'just in case one of the two new ones broke.'
That said, it's also looking like it's an influenza B outbreak. Should find out in three days after they do mass testing and then get the results back. Test kits are being flown down by a team who will board the ship, test all crew and all passengers who consent to the test.
Interestingly, even though the ship HAD a transit permit for the Panama Canal, it has apparently been revoked at this time. They may be indeed porting along the West Coast of the United States.
Royal Caribbean still wants to continue operations the 11th of April. Would anyone cruise in April? Talk about living in a fantasy world RC. I think you guys are out of business til end of year. I have 5k sunk in a April cruise I am trying to get back.

Relax. The coronavirus is out in the wild. No way to cram the genie back in the bottle. Millions of us have built up resistance to it. Isolate the symptomatic and carry on with our lives.
My prediction on this ship. When it rendezvous with the Rotterdam, the will move Zaandam passengers in inside cabins to the Rotterdam in outside cabins and balcony cabins.
They will put all passengers on both ships in fresh-air accessible cabins for the remainder of the trip to Florida.
I also say that the majority of folks on this ship, got on in January in Florida, sailed in and out of the Amazon, and as the ship-hit-the-fan, only made a pitstop in Argentina on March 7th. I cannot prove this since the web doesn’t show history of travel on these ships beyond the last and current leg. I can say that the wife and I looked at this sailing last year and saw the entire 77-day option there.

Yes, but in this hyperventilating drama queen world we live in, we need to execute and burn the bodies then sink the ship in open ocean.
I know that the Panama Canal is mentioned, but I didn’t see the itinerary for the entire cruise.
The government will either suggest or require certain meds before some cruises, depending on the itinerary. I wonder if any of the passengers decided to get the malaria meds just to be safe. If so, are any of them testing positive?
