Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced new measures Sunday to help fight the spread of the coronavirus in L.A., as well as speed up testing for high-risk residents.
While many Californians have been adhering to stay at home orders and social distancing guidelines, like keeping six feet distance from other people, far too many are not, the mayor said.
"This weekend we saw too many images of too many people crowding beaches or canyons beyond their capacity. Too many people, too close together, too often," Garcetti said. "The longer we do that, the more people will get sick, and the more people will die. There's no way to sugarcoat that."
Group sports and recreation at local parks, including golf courses, are banned under the expanded "Safer at Home" order, he said.
"And I'm concerned about the crowds at our famous Boardwalk in Venice Beach
Parking lots near Venice Beach and the Boardwalk will be closed starting Monday, he said. Santa Monica has also decided to shut down its beach-side parking lots.
Garcetti said he planned to work with other mayors of beach communities and county officials to address the issue.
"I hope we can assess how we can make sure that people aren't congregating on our beaches, and if necessary, close them altogether," he said.
Long Beach officials announced the closure of sports facilities in the city's parks and beaches, and asked residents to avoid gathering in public.

Maybe people were trying to send a message to elected officials...They will not tolerate a "shutdown" for several weeks...
Venice Beach parking lots will be shut down...But, a person could park his car on Venice Blvd. and walk to the beach...Mayor Garcetti did not close the beach.
Aren’t the florida beaches shut down now?
Last I heard, Gov DeSantis refused to close them. Good for him, I say.
Communism
After seeing the Chinese fogging streets and everything else with who knows what, I’m starting to think of the virus as a scent that is odorless. If it had an odor, think of walking into a room that has roses in it. If you smell roses, you caught it. Or a cigarette being smoked in the car in front of you, while your moving down a street. If you can catch a wiff of it, you caught it. I’m not saying it is that bad, but...
In Florida, some counties have closed the beaches on their own. But the state only put in restrictions that banned groups of 10 or more and people must stay 6 feet away from each other.
So far, DeSantis is only doing lockdowns and curfews in increments as they are needed. And it’s driving liberals crazy here as they are all demanding “shelter in place” orders.
It would seem keeping the beaches open would be a healthy option. Warm sun, salt water, breezes would lead to anti-viral propagations. Keeping spacing between people would be the main issue if crowds are involved.
I am from Colorado and our Dem Gov got up and addressed the outbreak. He had a good point. The great enforcer is NOT the government. The great enforcer is the flu (and death) itself.
Indeed the Safer at Home deal sounds like when the media gets back to real news we hear about all the stabbings in homes.
Cabin fever never end well.
We went to the sandbar yesterday and it was packed. Never seen it that crowded. We didn’t stop but went to a nearby island. When we got back to the ramp the entire parking lot was packed all the way down to the entrance. Never seen so many trucks/trailers.
Crazy but we had a blast out on the island.
