Ruthenians (Belarus) vs the Germans.

In Russian war movies they are, of course, the good guys.
Both the Russians and Germans were socialists, no fan either but I find it hard to root for the Soviet communists. The soviets were anti-God, the Germans were not.
That was pretty good!!!!
Hitler was anti-God; he simply didn’t have time to eliminate religion yet.
Belarus lost more people per capita than any other “country” during WWII (though of course it wasn;t a country at the time). The numbers get skewed, especially in Ukraine, due to the number of non-Russian people in the USSR that were recruited to fight against Stalin.
ARMENIA lost more people per capita than any other country during WWII.
But I really liked the battle scenes.
Don’t see it as a matter of rooting for one or the other. They were our allies, they paid a high blood price to put the sickle and hammer flag over Berlin. That was blood we did not have to shed to crush the Nazis.
My favorite Russian movie is “The Fall of Berlin”

I mean it’s slavish devotion to Stalin is so over the top, especially the ending when they show Stalin arriving in Berlin. (Although no such trip took place, Stalin only went to Potsdam, but it was much more low key)
But “Brest Fortress” really is one of the best war movies I’ve ever seen.
It couldn't have been as bad as "The Battle of the Bulge"
Belarus was where the movie “Come and See” (Idi i Smotri) was based.
Sometimes I wish I’d never watched it.
Are you referring to WWI?
Belarus lost nearly 2.3 million people, 25% of its population.
Armenia lost 180,000 people, 13.5% of its population.
It isn’t even close.
Yes, that was a miserable movie - and illustrates the issue I described (non-Russians working for the Axis). That struggle continued after the fall of Berlin, ending in 1946.
I am surprised Hitler didn’t offer Ukraine basically the same deal he gave Slovakia, of being a puppet state. He would have gotten much more support there, and probably would have had a much easier time fighting Stalin.
Yes, they blew those krauts up real good.
I just wanted to see a bit more of Pavla.
Actually he was making one hell of a try at it.
The only thing I like the arrival to Berlin is for the make up for actors playing Stalin, Churchill and FDR. Oscar-worthy. Other than that it was a crappy piece of propaganda.
I thought the series “Liberation” was pretty good, especially since it didn’t have the same Stalin worship.
Liberation was okay, but Come and See you mentioned is probably the best anti-war movie of all time. I think it is in top three with the Japanese ‘Human conditions’ and ‘Grave of the fireflies’.
I am referring to WWI anf WWII.
