How Dogs Have Become Hot Property During Spain's Coronavirus Lockdown
The Local (Spain) ^ | 19 March 2020

Once a twice-daily chore that drew a chorus of complaints, walking the dog has become an enviable get-out-of-jail card in lockdown Spain with some wily punters even offering their hounds out for hire.

Unlike in Italy, where people can go out to stretch their legs despite a national lockdown, Spain has banned all such sorties under its state of emergency.

But they can go out if they have a four-legged friend -- for a brief walk and only to carry out the bare necessities.

"You go out more often but for less time," says Luis Fe, a 49-year-old teacher walking Dara, his border collie, near a church in Madrid.

Other dog owners are the same, he says: going out "just because they can, or because they are bored at home."

With numbers of cases spiralling, Spain on Saturday introduced a nationwide lockdown to try and curb the spread of the virus that has now infected more than 17,000 people, making it the fourth worst-hit nation in the world.

"with some wily punters even offering their hounds out for hire."

That's a no-go, unless the dogs are somehow sanitized before being handed off. And jogging and bicycling have also been temporarily outlawed in at least parts of Italy.

I got in a Facebook discussion with a girl who was moaning about being stuck in her apartment, which didn’t have a balcony and felt like a prison cell. She was obviously expecting sympathy but she didn’t get any, which upset her even more and it turned into a class warfare thing about me in my big house with my large terrace, etc. She had no idea where I lived or what my circumstances were, she was just lashing out. Mind you, this was 3 or 4 days into the quarantine. Sitting in your apartment with plenty of food, drink and an Internet connection is what passes for torture with today’s youth.

Definitely emergency rations, but maybe not worth it depending on what you sacrifice to keep it plump & tender...

If you are referring to an American girl, it may be related to the hysterics after the Trump victory. After 8 years of ineffective Obamunism slowly dismantling the WASP culture, those crybabies had never heard the word “no” before.

Lived in Spain for 4 years. Never seen so much dog crap on the sidewalks anywhere else.

I live in Spain, which is totally different from America. There will literally be thousands of shutins like that girl just in my town alone. If you do a search for some of my recent posts you will see pictures of our fully stocked Supermarket shelves. The lack of space the girl is moaning about also has a lot to do with that. Many Spanish families don't have large refrigerators, standalone freezers (much less spare freezers) or large pantries for storage. They are more used to frequent trips to the market to stock up with small quantities.

A few months ago Paul Joseph Watson did a commentary on the rise of pod people. As far as I know they haven't downsized that much in Spain yet.

Still, that girl's moaning doesn't even take into account recent history when in 2003 (certainly during her lifetime) French seniors died in their apartments by the thousands during an August heatwave.

How ironic, considering the sadistically evil brutality they inflict upon them the rest of the time.

Thank you for the info!

I’ve referred to that heatwave in other posts (because of how it reflected on healthcare systems where medical staff are basically government employees); people in other Western European countries died as well.

Regarding the space issue, that applies here as well; my area is filled with old single-family homes, and many have been converted legally or otherwise) to multi-family. This is due to the lack of children (therefore less space required), high property taxes (so extra income is required by owners to pay them), and general demand in a fully-developed area with great mass transit access to NYC. In fact, this was a big story years ago when Hurricane Sandy struck; basement apartments in areas like Hoboken NJ weren’t covered by the owners’ insurance policies when those units were flooded.

Many of the tenants of these illegal apartments also have limited refrigeration/freezing capability; many are illegal aliens themselves who work long hours, with no dependents (and thus little need for much capacity). On top of that, illegal rooming houses have sprung up; tenants are literally renting just a room (and sharing facilities).

A friend in California described how many people there shop frequently (due to the climate; food doesn’t “keep”, as he described it).

As someone who lives with my family, I’m concerned about people (of any age) that are alone during this; it just isn’t how people are wired.

Be well!

It could be worse. You could be stuck in that apartment with her.

Get a leash and a collar. Walk around with it. When challenged, your dog slipped the collar and you are looking for it.

At least we have a good idea as to why she’s alone in her apartment and can’t find any companionship.

French seniors died in a heatwave due to not having a $10 fan and family who cared. Break the apt. window open if nothing else and then have maintenance fix it the next winter.

People have survived many a heat wave by opening a window. A/C hadn’t been in this house until we remodeled in the 90s. This is TX. It gets HOT.
