They have shown that it doesn’t do well outside the body at 80F and above...by your “conclusion”, even if warm weather helps kill it, we won’t be able to say it wasn’t just social distancing so we can never go back to a normal lifestyle.
And what are the economic consequences of widespread hospitalization and death from unchecked spread of COVID-19?
No, I'm not sure. Most likely, it will be FAR worse, and won't take as long as I'm projecting.
We could do a lot to prevent deaths by quarantining older, sicker people. There are countries that are surviving this disease without shutting down the entire country.
Oh, you mean like Hong Kong?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Hong_Kong :
On 25 January, the Hong Kong government declared the viral outbreak as an “emergency”, the highest warning tier.[12] The city’s largest amusement parks, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Ocean Park Hong Kong, and Madame Tussauds Hong Kong closed from 26 January, until further notice.[13] [...]
On 28 January, Chief Executive of Hong Kong Carrie Lam stated the high-speed rail service between Hong Kong and mainland China would be suspended starting on 30 January, and all cross-border ferry services would also be suspended in a bid to stop the spread of coronavirus.[14] Additionally, flights from mainland China would be cut in half, cross-border bus services reduced, and the Hong Kong government is asking all its employees (except those providing essential/emergency services) to work from home. In a later press conference that day, Carrie Lam said that the Man Kam To and Sha Tau Kok border checkpoints would be closed.[15] [...]
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) announced that all facilities overseen by the department including all public museums, public libraries and sports centres and venues will be closed until further notice as a health precaution.[16] On 14 February, the LCSD announced that the closure of its facilities will extended until 2 March 2020.[17] [...]
In view of the coronavirus outbreak, the Education Bureau closed all kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools and special schools until 20 April.[44]
The ECDC reports that in the EU/EEA as of March 12, “The 14-day cumulative notification rate of COVID-19, a measure of the prevalence of active cases in the population, [...] increased 10-fold over the last 10 days” - that is, an average of 26% per day. Hong Kong is a city, not a country.
Actually, I was thinking more about South Korea and Japan.
Although, I suppose it’s too late for the US to follow those tracks.
Hard to say, for certain how bad things will get with fewer lock downs. It’s not hard for me to predict what will happen to our economy if these wide-spread lockdowns drag on for 8-12 weeks. It will be economic disaster.
Hopefully, we will know more in another week or two, and can start making more informed decisions. A few weeks we can handle. A few months? No way. Our entire economic system will collapse.
