Peter Fitzgerald was a Reagan-style conservative, and utterly opposed by BOTH party establishments in Ilinois. He won anyway.

Which contradicts YOUR point that "Chicago picks the Senators anyway".

Of course, if the "abolish the 17th amendment" crowd had their way, Fitzgerald would have never become Senator. The gerrymandered IL state legislature would have simply made Carol Moseley Braun Senator for life.
