From an old friend in Italy:

When we come back in, we run and wash our hands with soap the way surgeons do, then disinfect keys, coins, handles, groceries. We wash our hands right after we blow our nose or sneeze, we disinfect surfaces and taps… I have not gone out for a week and will not do it now, because with the new restrictions only one person in the family can go out for necessary goods (which include newspapers - my mom has been reading the paper everyday since she was a little girl). When my sister goes out she wears a mask. We hear see read about the virus all day long, fake news and real facts. The WHO website and that of Italy’s Ministry of Health are a good source of information. A good place to get correct information is also https://www.medicalfacts.it/, a website by Roberto Burioni, an infectious disease specialist. It is in Italian but the written pages can be translated. There is a lot of wrong information around. The main thing is to avoid contact, but some people don’t seem to have understood that very well. Some do not gather information, some do not understand and some do not want to understand. The worst part of this is that by their irresponsible and criminal behavior they do not only endanger themselves, but other people, too. Social life is forbidden in Italy. Only one person can go in a small shop at one time. The 1mt distance one person from the other must be observed in supermarkets and on the street. You can walk your dog but not too far from your home. People are allowed but highly discouraged to go for a walk or out running, and one must do that alone. The streets are deserted, some trains go by because some people continue to work but most of them are empty. There is absolute silence.....

This virus is nasty, and if you do catch it with symptoms it can be very unpleasant if not lethal. It gives a deep kind of pneumonia. The majority of the deceased people had ongoing pathologies, but there have been exceptions to that. It seems to attack men more than women, 60/40% in China and 70/30% in Italy. Not much is known about the virus. They don’t even know if you are immune after having caught it and recovered. We can’t afford to catch the virus but we cannot do any more than what we are doing now. They don’t know why it got so big in Italy. I hope it never spreads this bad in other countries, but if strict measures are taken too late, then it might. So you all be careful, don’t underestimate the problem just because it is not dramatic yet in the US, please!
