Why did CBS cancel ‘Hawaii Five-O?’

Question: I want to know why Hawaii Five-O has been canceled. It’s been a hit since its first episode 10 years ago. It makes no sense to have a show that is so good and has great ratings to be canceled. —Mary

Matt Roush: Networks don’t always feel compelled to give a “why” when it comes time to ending a long run, but it usually has a lot to do with the business of show. While Hawaii is popular, and does well in the international market, any show becomes increasingly expensive over the long haul when it comes to renewing contracts, and already the show has shed many of its original players. According to the industry trades, stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan’s contracts were up, and the last time this was the case, there was much speculation that O’Loughlin would walk away in part because of on-set injuries. He stayed for another couple of years, but some trade reporters have suggested that this time, enough was enough, and while the network may have considered continuing the show with a new lead, they eventually decided this was a proper time to end. No fan likes to see a favorite show go off the air, but with the current exception of SVU and Grey’s Anatomy, no show lasts forever. (And who’s to say if Magnum P.I. sticks around for a while that you won’t see some of the Hawaii crew from time to time?)

I watched a lot of the show as a kid. I don’t remember any hesitation about shooting bad guys. They just never were able to hit Wu Fat.

On par with the totally inconspicuous “striped tomato” driven by Starsky.

Hutch’s Galaxie was what I’d drive as an undercover cop.

Kono sort of got a short-lived 2nd chance in Code Name: Diamondhead.

It’s an MST3K movie.

They tried rebooting it in the early ‘90s with Scott Bakula. It was a fiasco.

Producers brought Chi McBride onto “House, M.D.” and that also was a fiasco. They axed him quickly.

Now they have Grace on a dreadfully insipid nighttime ensemble soap, “A Million Little Things...” Total waste for her.

I'm originally from Honolulu. I watched the original Hawaii 50 and Magnum PI. They didn't have great acting or writing. But I enjoyed seeing Hawaii.

James MacArthur ( Danny "Danno" Williams) died on October 28, 2010, at the age of 72, of cancer, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

On “House”, McBride was the exceptionally ruthless counter-balance to House. I’ll guess it was a limited story arc.

Didn’t the producers also bring in David Morse(?) as a House-P.O. cop to stir things up as well?

House had to have his Moriartys.

Lord was not well-liked by his fellow cast members. He saw himself as an artist and liked to brag he had sold a piece of art to a major museum in New York City. Lord also interrupted production from time to time to regale the company with poetry he had written. Everyone just shrugged and went along, since Lord was the star was knew how to exercise his clout, with the producers and CBS.

On the positive side, Lord was a perfectionist who insisted on quality and demanded that everyone give their best performance. Other cast members admitted those traits made 5-0 a better show and probably extended its run by a few years.

Jack Lord only made one other TV appearance after the series ended, playing a Navy admiral in a pilot that was rejected by the network. He invested well and was worth more than $40 million when he died. His wife, Marie de Narde, was fifteen years older than Lord and lived to the age of 100. She died in 2005, seven years after he passed away from Alzheimer’s.

Yeah, McBride was only on for a handful of episodes. Almost brought the show to a screeching halt. I don’t know what kind of an outcome they were thinking was going to result from that, because one or the other was going to have to exit... and the show was not starring McBride.

And, yes, David Morse was on it as well for a time (6 episodes, apparently). He did get an Emmy nomination, though.

Ultimately, House really didn’t need “villains”, because House himself played both roles of hero and villain. He was his own worst enemy.

I always thought it sucked, especially super CIA karate killer mama. I liked the original.

The only drama tv programs I watch now are SEAL Team, Prodigal Son, Project Blue Book, Vikings (which will end after the second half airs), and Evil (it’s 1st season is over, and it’s been renewed for a 2nd season).

SEAL TEAM (CBS) is an OK show...

I regularly watch CHICAGO PD (NBC) and SWAT (CBS)...
