Grace Fusco — mother of 11, grandmother of 27 — would sit in the same pew at church each Sunday, surrounded by nearly a dozen members of her sprawling Italian-American family. Sunday dinners drew an even larger crowd to her home in central New Jersey.
Now, her close-knit clan is united anew by unspeakable grief: Mrs. Fusco, 73, died on Wednesday night after contracting the coronavirus — hours after her son died from the virus and five days after her daughter’s death, a relative said.
Four other children who contracted coronavirus remain hospitalized, three of them in critical condition, the relative, Roseann Paradiso Fodera, said.

Chris Cuomo had that Fanuci doctor on tonight....at the end of the interview, Cuomo mentioned the 2009 H1N1 outbreak...60 MILLION infected...12,000 deaths in a single year here...and these crazy economic and safe guards were not done then. The doctor got very dismissive and defensive...all he really said was “THIS IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT..JUST TOTALLY DIFFERENT”....i dunno man...something about that guy....

What I’m worried about is that you perhaps and others will think that “what me, worry? I’m not Chinese” — and that is wrong.
This virus is affecting all races - white, black, etc. - we all need to exercise the same precautions.

Minimal estimates are that coronavirus is 6 times as deadly as flu. So that means that if it spreads through the US as much as the flu has by this point, 6*48000 = 288,000 will die, or more than in the tsunami.
But unlike flu, there is no immunity to coronavirus. So, the coronavirus will spread to a larger part of the population. Even if it only affects twice as many people, that would be over a half-million deaths.
And that is without looking at the effects of the health care system being overwhelmed.
I wonder if there’s a genetic component to this?
It seems strange that so many in one family would succumb to it like that.
Her, at her age, yes, I could see that, but her children too? They could not have been that old.
That would be wonderful.
And when things get back to normal, or whatever the new normal is going to be, I will make sure I am more ready than ever.
Which you can take in the house and promptly put in the sink to wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water and rinse thoroughly..
I realize that not everything can be washed, but simply putting non-perishables aside for a time period, if you aren't able to wash them (Boxes vs bottles and cans) will allow the virus to die off on the surface.
Then you can bring it further in the house after a couple weeks for use.
It's good to rotate your stock of food anyways.
Bottom line is we don't know. There could be mutations in some parts of the world, all the "patient zeroes" were different. Viral load may be higher leading to a quicker infection and more severe case. It usually takes 1000's of viruses of any sort to get infected. Finally consider pollution. Northern Italy is heavily polluted especially in winter.

Exactly. When my husband died after an incorrect dx, and I was still horribly grief stricken, I got the bill...$400,000 for 8 days in the hospital, zero medications, zero time in a speciality unit and the care of an Iranian “MD” who would hear no alternative diagnoses. The correct dx was presented by a white American doc and me to the iranian MD and he threatened to have my husband discharged preemptively and my presence in the hospital prevented.
In my grief I generated a whole lot of fury as I checked every cost, the date and procedure. I found many duplicates...so many I was able to reduce the cost by $200,000. That did not help me as $200,000 was too much for me to handle...and I have never recovered since.
Rather than have my kids experience such as I had subsequent to that “hospital error”, I have decided to hie myself and my 20-yr old car out to mesa land in NM, park my body at the base of a mesa far removed from any habitation, and starve to death. With adequate water it should take about 3 weeks or so. I am hoping someone may get me a Bromfin (? sp or even the name) cocktail to ease any disquietude.
My conclusion is that our society is far more cruel than benign and old people don’t matter as their exploitation is the law of the land and rule of the day. The triage of Elders with the Corona virus is a perfect example of our worth.
Clearly I have lived too long to have figured this out.
