When I was growing up in Whittier, we usually went to Huntington when we went to the beach. But I preferred Corona del Mar, with its tide pools, and Newport Harbor, where one could swim without having to fight the surf.

This one deals with loss as well as being alone. On a personal level, after my grandmother died I remember listening to this in the car and I began to cry. It was a long time before I could hear this one without choking up.

Regular at the Sunset Tower here, used to get tossed out on occasion when Elton was in town and wanted to go shopping. They later built one on Piccadilly Circus in London. It has survived, I believe.

I think Elton had a place up in the hills not far from Tower.

Across the street from Tower was a record store called Licorice Pizza, where I would occasionally shop. They advertised heavily on the radio. The voice of Lesley, their spokeswoman, was familiar to pop music fans in the Southland.

“Xanadu” by RUSH (live)

The story of a man that seeks and finds immortality.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuHS-gjMiVw

“Held within The Pleasure Dome
Decreed by Kubla Khan
To taste my bitter triumph
As a mad immortal man
Nevermore shall I return
Escape these caves of ice
For I have dined on honey dew
And drunk the milk of Paradise.”

Here's four songs with loneliness as the theme although that might not be clear from the songs' titles:

"Everybody's gone away..."

Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues by Danny O'Keefe

"Just my dog and I at the edge of the universe..."

Edge of the Universe by the BeeGees

"It's so very lonely, you're 100 light years from home..."

2000 Light Years by the Rolling Stones

"Away from home, away from home, cold and tired and all alone..."

500 Miles Away from Home by Bobby Bare
