New York officials say the states coronavirus total has jumped to 1,700, with at least 19% hospitalized. They said the number of cases will continue to rise as the state receives more test results. New York has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds, far short of what state health officials are predicting will be needed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

They seem to have the Iran strain based on sequence analysis.
Is that the “L-strain”?
If they don’t have a plan for more beds in an emergency, it’s because they are the swamp.
They’ve all gotten millions of dollars over more than a decade to prepare for such a contingency.
You’re right. That should be done. Sort of like ‘polling’ the population.
Yes but it depends. I expect Colorado numbers to be similar because current policy is we are not testing anyone who isnt sick enough to be admitted. When you only test the so meet people the percentage of hospitalized goes up. It will be interesting to see what the next few days bring. Hopefully we can also start using treatments like chloroquine - cheap and apparently quite effective. If we can shorten hospitalizations h a few days that would change the entire equation

There’s no plan or policy to keep hospital’s open that aren’t making money - even if they serve a very important purpose. ~168 rural hospitals have closed in the US since 2005, and hospitals are closing everywhere in the US at a rate of 30/year. That’s a lot of hospital beds lost. Plus, from a financial perspective, hospital corporations like to operate their hospitals at a high bed occupancy rate, which is fine when there isn’t an emergent situation, but leaves little room for a crisis situation.

You make fine points but I’m talking about PAHPA the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act which was passed in 2006 and its associated titles which are meant to plan for just such an event as an epidemic that could cause there to be a dearth of beds etc...

Thanks for your post. Its helpful.
syracuse?
we have to trust Trump and rely on GOD.........
well I've had a head cold with sneezing and stuffiness and post nasal drip and then cough for about 3 days now....no fever....
I thought covid was fever, deep cough, body aches....when did this head cold stuff get put in?
Perhaps the disconnect is that the worst of CV effects is limited to the elderly. Most people who get it dont know it...they think they simply have the cold. So, unless your circle of friends includes a bunch of 8o year olds, then you want hear of anyone having anything.

I wonder if NY is a sanctuary state. I wonder how many of the precious beds NY assigns to illegal aliens.
should start calling it the Blue State Flu
Not sure how else I can explain it. I am not an infectious disease expert...
I guess some corona viruses cause colds, and others cause recessions

Thank you for your service!
Prayers UP!!!
NY’s total will be well above 20,000 in just a few days time
That is the question that matters.
So currently, NY has massive numbers of ICU rooms available, compared with expected need for this. Its been running at 6% of all known infections need an ICU and 20% checked into a hospital. This is far less, for now.
China claimed 20% of known infected checked into hospitals, while 6% needed ICU.
