If this is winning, I’d hate to see losing.

“As of early 2020 the navy believes the EMALS problems have been solved.

BUT One problem does remain. If one EMALS catapult develops problems all four EMALS catapults are out of service until the malfunctioning one is fixed. That was not a problem with steam catapults.

How much faster are 3 steam catapaults than ZERO EMALS catapults?

Actually the Navy will love smaller carriers. Ultimately it will mean more carriers and thus more Admiral slots, more REMF slots, etc etc.

These new super complex ships do not seem to be designed for combat tempo, battle damage, quick repair or durability. One exocet strike and they’re out of business.

I served 19 months on an LST built in 1953. I don’t think we had urinals even in the officer quarters. In the enlisted berthing compartments, there were sinks on one side of the passageway and on the other side there were two areas each with four toilets. There were two on each side facing each other. Helped promote comradery.

I don’t know why the Gov’t doesn’t hire Automotive Purchasing/supply chain people to run Procurement and Projects
in Puzzle Palace.

CVN Ford traveling the same road as Tiger tanks once did. Great equipment but lots of downtime, things that don’t work, very very expensive etc.

Better question: how do the returning pilots feel when they learn they cannot land?

That is just plain stupid design. How is that possible?

A down catapult does not prevent landing in and of itself.

But to lose all catapults because one is down is just plain stupid.

Like Biden, Gerald Ford was an accident waiting to happen. Bumping into thing, stumbling down stairs, etc. The ‘news’ used to show a montage of his latest coordination issues, much like Biden’s verbal gaffes. How could anyone expect anything different in an aircraft carrier named after Gerald Ford. You get what you ask for.

They will land but maybe not on the ship.

Idiotic to have all tied together where one down all down in a ship designed for war. Beyond stupid.

Good article! Thanks for posting it all. ...Too bad that their Quality functions failed and lack of proper testing occurred during development and ship building.

I served on the FDR (CVA-42); old Midway class with steam cats. I was in Catapults Division and our last 6 months or so of deployment in the Med I was the below deck starboard cat console operator.

As a 19 y/o and only E-3, it greatly boosted my self-confidence that my Chief and Div. Officer entrusted me with successfully having the steam pressure right and using the console to launch the various aircraft. That billet normally required an E-6 or higher.

Can that ship be re-named the Obama?

No warship should be named Obama!

Ha!

Our head and showers was all in one space across a passageway from our berthing compartment. ...Two showers, 3 sinks and 4 toilets (for 60 men). The toilets all faced the showers, but the poop all went into a metal trough about 1 foot below that had running water that carried all waste to a downpipe at one end. ...I recall pranksters on an upstream toilet would wad up toilet paper and set the top on fire, before carefully placing it on the water. It would then flow downstream to scorch the rear ends of others.

such landing are usually called ‘ditching at sea’ ... unless the carrier is within the bingo range of the planes’ remaining fuel. A lot of lost, very expensive planes and irreplaceable pilots. Evidently the price the Admirals are willing to pay for the latest and greatest toys
