It is hard for me to reconcile all of this since our family witnessed cytokine storm taking out healthy teenager via flu/sepsis/pneumonia

So this is why I say I can’t quite get it all to mesh

Regular flu can and does take out young people sometimes, often with cytokine storm. “Spanish” flu took out many that way. Covid 19 is not in the flu family, perhaps it does not trigger an excessive immune response the way flu can.
