Cuomo is an attention grabbing punk.

He is covering the fact his NY State hand sanitizer, made with prison labor, is over budget and behind schedule

I gotta figure that NY metro area will end up being the hardest hit in the end, due to population density and the use of mass transit. I hope we can get this behind us as quickly as possible but it seems only logical that NY area will see the fastest and widest spread of Covid19.

CA and WA are hit first, mostly because these are places where incoming flights from the far east land, and the population of Asian community. Just, statistically speaking, more likely to have social interaction with someone who recently came back from the hot spots. WA appears to be the most deadly spot, in part because it spread around one particular home for the elderly who are at higher risk of death.

The two curiosities are why it it Iran and Northern Italy so fast and hard. For Italy, I read it had something to do with Milan importing a lot of textiles for the fashion trade from China. But Iran? And in Iran, the disease seems to have spread among the upper echelons first, the elite, the political class etc. What’s the nexus there? Seems suspicious.

Generally speaking the less dense the population, either city by city, block by block, or house by house, the less likely for contagion. That the US, outside of the cities, is not very densely populated and that we are food and energy independent could be are saving grace if this thing gets out of hand and we have to “blockade” Asia and Europe for several months. But I hope it all blows over quickly and every takes proper precautions.

“Almost like when you look at a road map highway system.”

The Boston to DC megalopolis (is that the word?) has to be the most densely populated part of the country by far. NJ is the most densely populated state, I know that. So of course any disease will spread more rapidly.

I don’t know about the West Coast, but I suppose the entire pacific coast gets a lot of travel from Asia, like almost everyone who comes from the might stop at least on the West Coast, even if they didn’t remain there.

The thing is, it has spared the really really big cities. Beijing, Seoul, Rome, all in countries that had breakouts, but at least up to now they are not in bad shape.

If population density has something to do with it..and it sure seems like it would..then shouldn’t roughly half of all the infected be found in larger city towns?
i would guess more than half due to the transient nature of larger city towns?

OK I am just riffing it here, but I’d guess:

Seoul, better hygiene and availability of testing, greater social compact resulting in more self-quarantine.

Beijing, could be fake numbers, or, not too much interaction with Wuhan province in particular, greater fear of retribution for not taking precautions, lots of people wearing masks.

Rome, not entirely sure. Ancient Rome grew its empire because they developed roads and aqueducts. But that also enabled the rapid spread of diseases like the plague. Italy really wasn’t a “country” until the late 1800s. Before then it was still a semi-united series of protectorates. In fact much of European people still refer to themselves as being from a particular city or region as opposed to their nationality. So maybe there is some social distancing between Milan/Northern Italy vs Rome and Southern Italy. (Ironically last November I was pressured for business reasons to sign up for an event in Northern Italy that is scheduled to occur in 2 weeks - I am glad I chose not to pay for all that - and am not even sure if the event will occur at all, and if it does I imagine it will be very poorly attended).

But I still gotta think that mass transit systems = mass transmission of communicable diseases. I don’t know the incubation period of Covid19, anecdotally people who were “exposed” are going into 14 day self quarantine so I imagine that to be roughly the time-frame. So if we reacted too late, I’d say within 7 days we’ll see if cases skyrocket in places like NYC. Also within homeless camps etc where hygiene is poor. Not to mention, testing is still not widely available so it may be spreading wildly, with a lot of people just not showing major symptoms.

But I am hoping we acted quickly enough to keep importation of the virus to a minimum, and that it won’t spread greatly from this point forward in the USA.

Southern NJ ( pine barrens) we don’t have any cases yet. We are pretty rural so we are praying for the best and laying low.

"The way I heard it, Cuomo is practically begging Trump to call for something akin to martial law so he, Cuomo, can blame Trump for whatever may go wrong."

Yes, it's the same tired playbook they tried to force on Shrub during Katrina which was to poise US military in New Orleans in order to trigger posse comitatus laws.

In fact, inviting posse comitatus in Louisiana was the exact subject of repeated phone convos from top Democrat operatives (specifically one who has been on cable all week wearing a sweatshirt and a baseball cap) pressuring Governor Gramma to pin Shrub into posse comitatus violations.

Blanco never ran for re-election or so much as dogcatcher ever again precisely because of those posse comitatus communications (Bush's people had intercepted all of the phone records, and she couldn't take the heat); and died in 2019 of malignant melanoma before COVID-19 could take her sorry ass...

You forgot NY metro area will be hardest hit because (1) they are a sanctuary city allowing every diseased piece of illegal garbage in the world, including CHINA, to pollute their streets, housing, and schools and (2) they have the commie piece of corrupt filth DumblASSio for a mayor, who is currently not closing the schools and who is now calling on TRUMP--who he has bad talked innumerable times--to come and save NYC, when he, Comrade Bill the Inept, cannot.

"Cuomo basically had to lose his cool at the media and the legislators in this press conference. I’m no fan of Cuomo’s, but he is a good manager and understands the job he signed up for - unlike our NYS legislature, apparently. Cuomo has handled this outbreak as well as I guess could be expected (and I think bringing out the Corps of Engineers is a great idea that should be implemented here, given the numbers of cases we will have).

I also appreciate him saying that the politics of this need to be left to another time when we are looking back at this in our rearview mirror."

You are wrong on so many levels, noob.

Cuomo is positioning himself for whatever in what he thinks is waiting for him in a Biden admin -- he'd prefer VP but he'll take HUD or some stupid sec'y shit to ride out a spotlight seat for #2024. Won't happen, but still.

Still the point is, which has evaded you since you've joined, the Democrats want to crash the private healthcare system. Testing healthy people who are carrying COVID-19 will do exactly that.

I'm not about to waste one more single second of my life explaining it to you...read Free Republic and educate yourself.
